Cream Legbars

My CL is growing up, when will that comb start growing? She is almost 20 weeks.

They do grow rapidly, which is one of the reason the barring on the legbar is not as crisp as on other barred birds.

You must likely will not get a huge comb on that bird.

Based on the size of the crest and size of the comb now at 20 weeks, i am betting it will redden as she approaches "chickenhood" and she drops her first egg, but the size wil not change much...

For your area in upstate NY, that is the perfect comb, frostbite will most likely never hit it.

Thanks for reminding me of our cold winters, I didn't even think of that as I was hoping and wishing for her to grow a big floppy comb, I was just thinking how cute I think those combs are. Yes, we will be better off if her comb stays small.

ok everyone, I think it's been a month or so since I last posted pictures of these guys so I thought I'd post an update to show how they're coming along and see what you guys think.

Boy #1 (he has a weird thing going on with his hackles from an injury when he was a baby)

Pullet #1 still rather young but I didn't post her picture last time

Pullet #2 She's the one that I did post last time, just a little more grown now. She looks slightly more gold in these pics than she typically does just because of the lighting in the coop.

Oh boy,,, I love to talk about good and bad on these...

But I have gotten gun shy because some people say I am mean when I say these things...

So remember I am saying what I see when it is up against the SOPs.

It does not mean it is not a good bird. And if I say I would not breed it, I am thinking of it as breeding with mine of the opposite sex. I am not being mean...or trying too.

Judy on your rooster, is he a cockerel? He appears young.

I like the hackle feathers quantity and color. Length looks good to me.. The keel is too short, most likely age. The ear lobes are too red , the tail angle is good. I think i see red/chestnut in the saddle feathers is a probem. no crest that I can see, the head is moving though, it appears to have 5 points not six, not a deal killer. the main defect I see is the comb not straight and the black on the underbelly area..oh and the lack of a crest would be a disqualifier.

I like the hen other than the comb, and crest color, I would keep her as I think she could be used to balance traits in other birds, the angle is hard to see much, but I think she might be more of the creole than the cream when that comes to be. I notice she has the black crest we talked about a week or so ago. Something about her body is appealing.
