Crime and the economy

I agree.

Of course there are issues with any system. Any time you involve people you are going to have problems. However, with 50 MILLION people uninsured, and that number growing all the time, our system is among the worst of the developed nation. We are not a third world nation, we are among the wealthiest.

We have some fantastic doctors and nurses, but for every story you find of someone suffering from poor decisions in other systems we can find them here due to "denial of coverage". Add onto that the fact that the majority of bankruptcies are due to health care costs.

Capitalism and the free market can be a great thing, but leaving it in charge of our health care system can lead to disaster, as we are seeing for many Americans. We are a nation of bright, compassionate, educated people, we can do better.

I don't usually respond on the political threads, but I had to comment on this one.

AngieChick, I agree with you. I used to be a nurse, but left the system because of my frustration with a health care system that cared more about making $$$ than doing the right thing. I am now a teacher, and can live with my low salary. I am never reprimanded in my current job, if I do the right thing.

I have a friend from Spain. She has citizenship in both countries. She says it amazes her that people here are so afraid of a government health care system. She finds it appalling that we have so many people who can't get care because they can't afford it. In Spain, everyone gets care, even the visitors. If you were on vacation there, and needed medical care, it is provided, without cost to you. They don't care if you don't pay their taxes. It is the ethical thing to do.

Our system will not be a carbon copy of any of these other systems. I think we spend too much time hanging on for dear life to our own system, pointing at any problem in any government health care system because at least we know the snake we've got by the tail. It's the unknown that scares us.

I agree its the unknown that scares us...and even a valid lack of faith in our government.

I'm all for doing the RIGHT thing. The problem I see, is that I don't believe our government will do the "right" thing. I believe it will be even more about money than it is now.

Why are there people who can't afford health care? We do have government health care...Medicare, Medicaid, ChIPS, VA, etc.....not to mention all the county emergency rooms who are not allowed to turn anyone away. Why don't we fix those, instead of starting a whole new system with huge problems?

With any system there will be flaws, our health care system is not perfect but it is by no means a failure. In the past 6 months i have seen my family doctor 6 times gone to the emergency room 2 times, had an MRI and an ultrasound and I didn't pay one penny for any of it. Yes i had to wait 5 months to see the dermatologist but like I said nothing's perfect. All essential procedures, er visits and visits to the doctors office are covered. That is why we have a hard time understanding the fear surrounding government run health care. Every person does pay for it, depending on your income, dependants etc. Like I said we pay $14 a month, my dad makes ALOT more than we do and has no young kids at home so he pays $75 a month. The program is called fair pharmacare and we really like it

I just dont see how things will get better with national health care here in USA. THe poor will still get free health care and still not pay taxes......and the rest of us will have higher taxes..or something. Becasue they will NOT give us free health care for free...JMO

I understand, for countries that are so close they are very different. Up until a few years ago we had no real national debt so it wasn't an issue starting a national health care program.

You said it! Nothing is free. MY main concern with it would be:
1: Its government run..and we all know how that goes here...
2: right now with my insurance that i pay for, we DO have a say in our care..alot of say..more than we know. BUT..with government run care those rights/choices will be mostly gone, BUT we will STILL be paying for insurance..only through taxes or something through the government. So, i'd rather pay myself and have a say in my health care, then pay through taxes and have no say in my health care..

They're not planning on throwing out the whole system. But you need to try to read some of the stories on the web site about people whose lives were ruined by medical bills. I seriously don't get how people think this can't happen to them. I currently have a friend who has MS. She IS able to work - sometimes. And she wants to work. But, she can't always. SO she lost her job and of course lost her coverage. So yes, at some point she'll get SSDI, but that is months away and means she needs to not work at all. She made too much this year to qualify for most coverage but cannot afford the treatments she needs right now to maintain function.

Two sisters who had the same illness but lived in different states - one got great treatment and had no problems. One lived in a state with very little gov't coverage and got less treatment and still ended up with something like 90 grand in debt. Simply because of the state they lived in.

BTW emergency rooms may not be allowed to turn people away, but they certainly do deny them care at many levels. I'll post the web site when I get the link.
