I get what you are saying, and understand the concerns. However, with this particular issue I think we have to step back and look at the bigger picture of how best to serve the citizenry of our nation as a whole - not just those of us fortunate enough to have health insurance coverage at this moment.

Fortunate?! Fortunate has nothing to do with it. DH and I have worked our butts off to get into jobs that have employer provided insurance. We have accepted lower paying jobs and stayed in those jobs for years in order to have those benefits. During the periods of time where we didn't have employer coverage, we saved and paid for it out of our own pockets. We've been married for almost 14 years and haven't had a single lapse in coverage. This was during periods of unemployment, disability, strikes and out-of-state moves. Having healthcare coverage for our family has always been one of the top priorities for us. We would rather have less cars, a smaller house, fewer niceties and have health coverage. I've seen too many people complaining about not having coverage or using government-subsidized health/dental who have newer cars, homes and take a lot of nice vacations. My heart goes out to those families who have lost their jobs and honestly need help. They should get government-assistance. But I have no pity for those who put less priority on obtaining their own coverage and more priority on things and experiences.
