Crime and the economy

I get what you are saying, and understand the concerns. However, with this particular issue I think we have to step back and look at the bigger picture of how best to serve the citizenry of our nation as a whole - not just those of us fortunate enough to have health insurance coverage at this moment.

Fortunate?! Fortunate has nothing to do with it. DH and I have worked our butts off to get into jobs that have employer provided insurance. We have accepted lower paying jobs and stayed in those jobs for years in order to have those benefits. During the periods of time where we didn't have employer coverage, we saved and paid for it out of our own pockets. We've been married for almost 14 years and haven't had a single lapse in coverage. This was during periods of unemployment, disability, strikes and out-of-state moves. Having healthcare coverage for our family has always been one of the top priorities for us. We would rather have less cars, a smaller house, fewer niceties and have health coverage. I've seen too many people complaining about not having coverage or using government-subsidized health/dental who have newer cars, homes and take a lot of nice vacations. My heart goes out to those families who have lost their jobs and honestly need help. They should get government-assistance. But I have no pity for those who put less priority on obtaining their own coverage and more priority on things and experiences.

I have friends that are financial MUCH better off than I am. I have no right, no matter how much money they have and I don't, to take money away from them. EVER.

I had kids, they didn't. I went to a trade school and got a 2 year degree. They got Master's degrees. I had 2 kids. They got a dog or a cat

Using government to steal from other people is still stealing. Your hands are not clean if you use the force and power of government to take the earnings of others to use for yourself. It is still theft.

Wifezilla, you have said it perfectly. Taking something that does not belong to you, whether you will be punished for it or not, is still immoral.

Would you steal from a convenience store just because you knew you would not be caught? No, it doesn't belong to you. And neither do other people's assets that they have worked for and you have not.

Beak from Kiowa - this is off topic, but I was just wondering - what is that unique-looking animal photo you have in your message box border?

It went to healthcare because in the original post, the crime was stealing insulin from a pharmacy, or something like that. So, why did he have to steal insulin???

I agree that no one has the right to take from the rich, etc.

I have great plan for all this tied into tax reform, but as BYC staff member, I can't get too involved in political things.

So before I get in trouble, I am going to bow out of this and go tell my hubby and ducks all about my great plan!

LOL

We understand

(I did a stint as an AOL chat monitor...in a Politics room. All the republicans accused me of being a democrat. All the democrats swore I was a republican. I made them mad at about an equal rate so I must have been doing something right

The Titanic may not have sunk so fast if the people managing the construction had built it right.

I agree...but the boat is already built, it is on the high seas and already in the path of the iceberg.

Do you...

A) Take the boat on a different path and hope you don't hit a different iceberg

B) Evacuate the boat. Then build a NEW boat before heading out of port.

C) Fly in more passengers via helicopter with the thought that if everyone is stuck on the boat, someone will miraculously come up with a way to say everyone.

The government has selected C.

Doctors have to return to running their own practice. They have to post their rates on the door (so to speak) and let people decide for themselves who they want to see.

Insurance is a multi-billion dollar industry that is sucking up money that could be used for individuals to pay for their own care. Ever toured an insurance company? They used to drag us to them as kids for school field trips. HUGE buildings, expensive fixtures, people in fancy suits and a parking lot filled with pricey cars. How does any of that add to your ability to get medical services?

There will always be people unable to pay for needed care, but this is something that can (and is) handled by private charity, churches, etc. You know...organizations with accountability. Individual practices can also decide if they will charge on a sliding scale or offer scholarships. When you remove the person receiving the service from the person paying for it, that's where you get your problems.
