Crime: Why does anyone even bother?

Most prisions also have "canteens".. where the prisioners can buy their snacks and other quick cook foods, like ramen noodles..stuff in cans...etc...
Then they just barter that stuff for drugs in prison...

Sick..

So Elizabeth I have to ask after reading most all of the posts here... exactly what foods should I eat to stay out of prison? please be specific I as I have never been in prison.

From my little field trip to jail: for breakfast, you will have watered down powdered eggs, low bid fried balogna, 2 pieces of white bread, untoasted, and a combination of yesterday's evening tea and today's coffee.....For lunch, low bid bologna, 2 slices, 4 slices of white bread, packets of mustard and mayo, salt and pepper,[more commonly known as legal tender],macaroni salad[le piece de resistance] and a glass of weak tea.

I can't speak for the evening meal...I was out of there. According to the scuttlebutt, Thurs. night was chili night.Something to look forward to.

If that doesn't give you an incentive, nothing will.

Maybe a preview of the prison menu should be part of rehab. I cannot imagine "chile nite" my father said in the county jail the toilets were in direct view of the dinner table.

I really would have a hard time believing anyone's diet contributed to thier incarceration, or lack of rehab success. I was simply trying to determine what level of education and/or experience lead to such a viewpoint. All the reasons people are/are not in jail have all been debated in this thread. I myself had never heard of any credible research done into diet contributing to the prison population, but it has been my experience that criminals will grab on to all kinds of reasons to excuse thier behavoir and get out of living up to the consequences of that behavior. To me, and this is only my opinion, there is no education/research/experience that supports this new theory about diet. Bad decisions lead to bad places, whether it is I eat too much fat and have a cholesterol problem to someone who robbed a store goes to jail. Its called consequences.

I do think that there is a lot to be said for advertising the current jail menu could prevent people from going to jail LOL. Chili night, gives me creeps in my kitchen.

Yeah they calculate pretty much only calories offered as well. There's a couple other things like macronutrients but it's not nearly as regulated as it should be. And decent diets are nowhere near encouraged.

Budget plays a huge role in this, too. If you could figure out a way to get the right nutrients (that taste good) into the prisoners for a reduced cost, you might have a really great career ahead of you...

Oh yeah I know. I've been working on that. I think I can do it.

Okay I don't know where I said diet was a direct factor in crime. I had a myriad of other reasons people commit crime. I only said MY focus on criminal reform was diet because -I- was in nutrition and I came across some studies that made me think things could HELP if some of the diet was reformed. This topic came about in a round-about way - I mentioned nutrition and people started asking about it.

And yeah... Royd has the diet about right. Your choices are powderered reconstituted eggs and sugar-laden kid's cereal usually.

There is not MUCH research that supports a theory I have ALREADY SAID was my own from my own independant studies and from other studies I gathered from other universities. It's a theory I was hoping to research in much more detail when I got back to school. I think it's entirely possible diet can HELP reformation from what I've learned.

There was a study done, again by the University of Cardiff, where it was shown prolonged exposure to this sort of diet had negative effects on the brain that led to an increase in crime rates. I just feel if -I-, as a personal job, other than this current topic, were to work this over, the prisoners would not be on such a diet and would have better odds once released.

I disagree. You can tell a lot about the human condition by the way they treat their lowest common denominator. It's why I got into prison health - the 'comforts of home' is a laughable comment. Prison isn't terribly challenging (and prisoners say this, just keep your nose clean) but it isn't particularly home-like either. A lot of the things that get taken away from prisons (like television) actually CAUSE more crime because the criminals become bored and destructive, like children. The reason I took a particulart interest in prison diets is because I found they were feeding prisoners things that were proven to cause an increase in crime rate. All these things people want to take away from criminals (some who have done MINOR crimes) are the things that give them a higher chance of reformation. Unless we want to shut them away for every day and pay 200k a year in taxes each, we're going to have to work on reformation. Created bored obese criminals and putting them in a room to learn off each other for five years and then sending them into the world where nobody will give the a job because of their record... will only cause more crime. We can agree on that much, I'm sure.

You did say that elizabeth. (Post #60) I would also like some proof.
