I've stumbled onto something good. To those who are more sophisticated than I, I apologize if this is a no-brainer. Maybe it's useful to someone.
A friend gave me enough of a gorgeous variegated yarn to make an afghan. I've liked chevron afghans and never made one, so I thought I'd try. It didn't work. The pattern detracted from the yarn and the yarn detracted from the pattern. So, I decided the yarn needed straight rows. I started with single crochet and liked the horizontal sweep of colors. After five rows, I thought some variation would be interesting and switched to triple crochet. Bingo. The colors form little blocks, three to four stitches per block. The contrast to the sweep while keeping the same colors looks fabulous.
