Crop issues need HELP!

I sure hope your girl gets better. I just lost a 5 year old silkie due to this. Its a sad thing to feel so helpless. My girl also had a internal laying issue as well.your doing all you can. Hopefully she comes around for you!
Thank you! I have shed a lot of tears for a chickie I have only had for a month. So sorry you lost your Silkie. I keep thinking I will put her down to end her suffering and then I take a look and she is all happy, perky and eating well. Tomorrow is another day. I do hope she recovers.

Give two ducolax sodium 100mg capsules (stool softener) buy mouth followed buy at least 5ml of water or better yet water with electrolytes in it, then cheak your birds crop in the morning if it's not completely empty give two more capsules followed buy more water, keep repeating till her crops unblocked this always works even for the most stubborn crops , but once I had a hen whose crop just whouldnt clear so I asked my vet to do crop surgery on her and he found a rediculous amount of shavings in her crop that for whatever reason she had decided to eat, it was totally crazy the amount that was in there! , let me know how things go but please hurry as she is getting weaker every day and needs to start processing food asap and don't worry this is very safe to give and you caint overdose as its a simple stool softener but works great to turn anything impacted in a crop to mush very quickly

Omg! I have been hoping someone had used Dulcolax with success. I too was using the shavings, and caught this little piggy eating them, before I even knew she had impacted/sour crop! Thank you!! This chickie is only 10-12 weeks old. Is it ok to give 2?

Yes it's very safe to give two to her, I've even given 3 once to a very large marans girl once, and there was one silkie girl with a large impaction not caught right away but it still worked just took five days of giving ducolax morning and night but buy day five her crop was totally flat and was she ever hungry lol

Don't worry too much about sour crop at the moment and let's hope it's not that but if it is you will notice a fermenting smell and possibly a bubbling sound in her crop and we'll that's really a very bad thing and at that point needs imediate veterenary care because it's pretty far gone at that point and the crop contents starts to rot, causing thickening and inflamation of the crop wall and poisening of the blood stream in severe case, so ideally this needs to be treated like an emergency as the longer a bird caint process food the more likley they are to sadly not make it, I don't think twice if I notice a crop impaction or a squishy crop I give ducolax and plenty of water imediatley without delay and repeat till crop it totally flat against body which I cheak in morning before the bird has eaten anything. For birds that have a habbit of eating shavings it's a good idea to give them lots of healthy treats till they grow out of there obsession buy providingsome fresh watermelon or cantalope halves for them to eat, this is great for keeping a dehydrated bird (hydrated), I really hope she's going to be okay poor thing, speckeled susexx are amazing I used to have a girl myself and she was soo friendly and adventurous

Ok, so no food, just water until crop is flat? I was so scared to give him the little gel cap, as I was afraid it wouldnt go down and he would choke, but it did. Thank God!

What food do I give my chickie after the impaction is gone? Do I allow him only crumbles, grit, and lots of water or do I go slower, like crumbles mixed in with yogurt, nice and soft, grit and water. I imagine his crop will be a bit sore. Btw all this time he has been eating and pooping.

This evening she is still kind of puffed up with her head tucked in from time to time. She seems weak. She tried to fly onto a perch and couldn't get up to it even tho it isn't very high. I'd assume she's pretty weak from being malnourished. What should I do?

How is your chick doing Heather? Haven't heard from you this morning.

Yes give food as soon as you notice your bird wanting to eat, just give them there normal diet because as soon as the impaction is gone they will usually just start eating on there own, they know when there crop is out of order so witholding food isint going to make a difference as they just stop eating anyways from my experience cause they can sense a problem with there crop. So how is your bird doing? , has the crop emptied yet?

Don't force grit because although they need it as an aid in digestion they usually only eat a certain amount that remains deep inside there gizzard for long periods, so forcing more grit could actually stop up a crop too and build up too much, and grit is usually best to give when your birds are activley free ranging only as its really just to help break down long fiberous grasses not comercial grain because there very soft and platable , too much grit has cost someone the life of there bird so that's something that can also happen unfortunatley
