Crossing my Red Ranger Hens.

Those are some great looking results. What do you sell them for per pound?

Whole birds are priced at $13.90/kg or about $6.30/lb, most of the whole birds come out to $35 CAD each, which is priced right between premium free range conventional, and the high end certified organic prices locally. I could definitely get away with charging more, but don’t want to price gouge too much. Also with 6 lb birds there’s a little sticker shock. Plus we adjust the margin on the parted out birds to raise the overall gross profits.

Whole Birds $6.30/lb
Bone in breasts $7.20/lb
Boneless Breast $8,60/lb
Boneless Skinless Breast $9.95/lb
Thighs $4.95/lb
Drumsticks $4.50/lb
Wings $3.10/lb
Soup Bones $2.60/lb

When I get smaller birds we may adjust the pricing somewhat. We were aiming for 4-5 lb birds. Everyone told me I would need to go at least 12-14 weeks with the rangers.

You are certainly not price gouging, from my viewpoint! I am from Seattle, if you were on any of the San Juan Islands, you should be charging 2xs that!

How many birds to aim to sell every year? If I had more flat land and natural pasture, I would love to do what you do.

Here in AZ, I have seen Organic chicken at Safeway for ~$8.00/lb. And we are in the equivalent of the Australian Outback for the USA!

When the birds are smaller we will probably be raising the prices a bit... a 6lb chicken at $8/lb (never mind the exchange rate )... almost $50 for a chicken? I might have trouble moving those!

I’m just starting out with meat birds... my goal is to do 100-200 this year, primarily so I can hold back some breeders... I’m hoping long term, and once our General Store starts carrying my birds, I can do 1000-2000 birds at least per year. I’m starting out slowly to prove the viability of the market and the benefit to the pasture of the chicken tractors to the farm manager and family.

There must be a bunch of good free-ranging food on that island of her's! ;) Better find out what else she's growing over there! :gig

Burgers and lambchops, primarily. We have a very strong local market... now if only we could stop the summer people and tourists from bringing their inferior eggs to our island instead of buying from one of the many local vendors! :he
Here’s the farm garden:
