Crossing my Red Ranger Hens.

The Legbars have been way overpriced everywhere I have seen them in the past. I found them in a bin at Tractor supply where straight run were $1.99 and it was the end of their Chick days so from that price they were 75% off. @ 50 cents a chick well worth the investment. I won't have show quality or anything like that but I will have good foragers who can be autosexed and that might be perfect for me in the future.

They always have a super low price at the end of their chick days but the selection is usually really weak. This year they had all sorts of decent birds to pick from. I went back today to get something I needed and noticed that the chick display has been taken down so that must have been the last day close out sale.

More Red Ranger Crosses, this time hatched naturally under a Silver Grey Dorking.

She has 10 plus Chicks, half the chicks are Silver Grey Dorking (one is going die, too weak to keep up but I keep tending to it make sure it drinks, and put it back under Mommy after being left behind) some NN X Red Rangers, some NN x (Cemani X Red Rangers) one has the Fibro trait, and a Cemani X (Cemani X Red Ranger). Her sister is about to hatch I suspect today or tomorrow.

My Dorking X Ranger hens just laid a first egg at week 19 +1 day.

Chocolate egg layer so crossed with easter egger usually gets olive eggers!

Just checking... the more you type it the better it gets my phone now suggests it and sometimes auto fills at “barn” which has made for some interesting texts to my aunt-in-law! What’s a chief folate egg layer though?

The people in the genetics section will give you more accuracy that I will with making olive eggers but its a bit more complex. you need a Hen or Rooster with a double blue egg gene (I am winging it here with terminology) if you have the rooster with the double blue gene crossed with a dark egger then all will be olive eggers (or so I heard) if you have what I have which is a Hen with a double blue egg gene and cross her with a dark egger male you get a mix. I am told its 50% olive 25% blue/green and 25% brown.... out of 5 I hatched and kept until they started laying these are the 5 egg colors I got

Its an interesting novelty and fun to learn about but my eggs ended up smaller than desirable yet the hens eat as much as their larger egg counter parts so I will be making no more... at least no more with these parents.

Most easter eggers only have 1 blue gene, although they may have 2. I have no idea how to tell the difference without breeding and looking at the results. To save time it might better to start out with one of the pure breed blue eggers. I got lucky with a random blue egg layer just happening to be a hen with a double blue gene. I would be better off with a rooster with the double blue gene then all of them will be Olive eggers (or so I am told)... when it comes to genetics I am very novice. The folks who hang out in the genetics section tend to know a lot about this. I likely explained it wrong, not only am I winging it I am not the best when it comes to communication skills. Always fun to try and find out if your easter egger works out with making Olive eggers after all its what I did.
