Crossing my Red Ranger Hens.

What’s a UPS?

Uninterrupted Power Supply ... basically plugs into an outlet, and keeps a battery charged, when it senses a loss of power it switches over to battery power ... I have both my computer, and security cameras on two different ones ... computer gets about 1 - 1.5 hours of extra run time ... cameras are double that, so ... even a tiny blip in power, computer doesn't have a hard crash, and gives you time to finish up what your doing ... and cameras keep recording ...

Computers don't like dips or spikes in power, or "hard" shut-offs ...

Thanks! We had that for our emergency lighting, and the computers and tills at my last job, I didn’t know there was a specific term for it. Only thing that came up when I searched it was United Parcel Service, and I couldn’t figure out how that would help at all

Thermosiphon.

hot water rises & cold water falls. Design it right & the heat moves the water. For example, the water on top of the lake is warm but your feet find the cold spots.

Thanks! So much varied knowledge here, it never ceases to amaze me,

If anyone here as read the book "Sea Biscuit", the author talks about how jockeys used to climb into the middle of compost heaps to try to sweat out a few more pounds in order to make their weight goals.

:sick No thanks! There’s these things called “saunas” now, less stinky but the same idea, probably a lot safer too... Compost can get HOT! I miss composting... I just can’t get a pile going without something, usually cows or chickens, tearing it apart.

I don't even worry about my composts getting hot, I prefer chickens go through them for food, then all the weed seeds that do not get killed because the compost never got hot enough get eaten out of nursery pots as weeds by chickens and the plants I grow chicken usually do not eat, I found out this year that too many chickens gets them desperate enough to sample evergreens... a few samplings is not a big deal but 200 chickens sampling once a day stunted some plants of mine.

Yay! I have internet again after another 2 day black-out due to high winds in California.

I processed 4 of my Slow While Broilers today -- 2 roosters and 2 hens. The roosters weighed in at 5.5 and 4.5 lbs dressed, and the hens were 4 lbs each. There were a couple of days shy of 13 weeks.

That's quite a bit smaller than with a CX broiler. When I've let me CX go to 12+ weeks, I have gotten roosters in the 9-11 lb range and hens in the 6-7 lbs range. But, they were a breeze to raise. My broody took care of them the first 8 weeks, and the last month they just hung out like normal chickens. Foraging about the yard and roosting at night. They could have gone on a lot longer, but I wanted to start clearing out some coop space for my 3 week old Moyer broilers who rapidly outgrowing their brooder.

I did keep two SWB hens were were noticeable smaller than the others -- live weights were around 5. 5 lbs. I'll probably let the go to egg-laying age to see what happens.

Nice that CX would be in the 9-11 pound range. Almost turkey size!! well, at least a small turkey.

They are like small turkeys! We kept one whole and did the whole "turkey" dinner with it, stuffing, gravy, etc. They rest, we usually use to make Italian or breakfast sausage with as cooking up a 10 lb. bird is just too much chicken to cook up for a regular dinner.

These SWB, are actually a much better size for a roaster for us.
