Hens growing spurs has nothing to do with a male being present,
probably a quarter of my hens have spurs, and there have always been cock/erels..

This was a while back when we had a backyard flock of 4 hens for eggs. When we did get a roo, she hated him and they fought a lot. He was sweet though.

I'm really new to the chicken thing. Not sure of hens crowing but I do have two that scream well that's what it sounds like. Maybe I will be able to post the sound.

I wanna hear these funny girl chicken sounds...mine are pretty quiet except the odd one who will freak out for no apparent reason but to get the attention of all the other girls...and the one who comes up on my porch and makes a fuss outside the window for my (treat) attention until I go out and shoo her off with the broom, or throw some seeds in the garden for her.

It's been dark for a while here now.

Thinking I might be able to get her to crow again tomorrow morning if I let her out by herself and keep the lads crowing nearby. I hope so.

I'll be keeping my phone on me from now on.

It was a good effort. A bit croaky and weak, but pretty good for such a tiny hen.
