Crud! I have been snared in the net of NAIS...

SpottedCrow, do you also have other animals and are required to have a stable permit?

The Massachusetts Department of of Food and Agriculture does free NPIP testing and certification, something a lot of other states don't do.

Also when I had some chickens get sick and a few die the, Ag guy for our county was great and helped us get to the bottom of our problem!

I agree with Doug D. he was nothing but helpful and didn't ask to many questions. He only asked questions he needed to so he could understand what was going on. With out his FREE help we would have lost a lot more chickens. He inspects school lunches and stuff like that too and said getting out and meeting people with animals is the best part of his job. I don't think he would would get many calls if he was making people mad.

Has anyone read this

Some of you are making way to big a deal of some of the inspections. How would you feel if you got birds from someone only to find out they have a decease that doesn't go away in the 2 or 3 weeks that you quarantined them and your whole flock got sick. I like being inspected and I want anyone I get eggs or chicks from to be inspected, so I know I am getting healthy birds and if they are shipped they can be labeled as what they are not just fragile and left outside in freezing weather.

Spotted, I think your reply letter needs just a smidge of chicken poo on it before it is mailed.

Yah know country, in principle I agree with you. There should be more flock testing done. One bad bird can wipe out years of work.

Having said that I still feel it should be up to the person themselves if they get it done and the person buying to ask about it.

We really don't need the 27 pages of legislation that goes with it.

Cyn, actually the better more fitting document to wave under their noses would be the Declaration of Independence. That document is said to never be usurped by any other document including the shattered Constitution. I figure it like this, it is time for a new Constitution and lets throw out the trash ourselves!

Personally, I'd just ignore the letter. BUT. . . don't say that's what you're doing here or anywhere. Just quietly go about your business. Nothing to see here, thank you. Heck, lots of folks do it this way. Not mentioning any names, of course. Some folks are refusing to participate in many "government" programs that are intrusive (i.e. certain census people). Some folks think that quiet civil disobedience is more effective than getting in some beaurocrats (how do you spell that anyway?) face. Making it personal is unnecessary. Again, not mentioning any names here. And some folks just don't feel comfortable giving out any personal information out over the phone or to other folks that knock on the door. However, should more of these other folks show up at the door again, friends from newspapers will be called and the folks will be escorted off of the property. Some folks have been apologized to for having their lives disrupted.

Some folks are wishing you the best of luck with this unfortunate problem,

Spotted Crow was pretty much minding her own business, obeying the rules when she was intruded upon with this silly business, so now she has been forced to respond and act. I hear you, Mark, and some folks agree with that approach. Not mentioning any names, either. Yes, 'tis most unfortunate, to be sure.

DougD and Country Entertainment...it seems like you also have one of the "good guys". I love my ACO. He's a Vietnam Vet who helps homeless Vets. And he tells great war stories.

The form for my chicken license also has permits for restaurants and hottubs...

I agree Rosalind, not a Cabot, Putnam or another of the old money...
