Cruel people/ dumped kittens

They look like they are just over 2 weeks old and their eyes just opened, poor things

! Some people are just, well I can't even say really, they are jerks! If you have a Petco or Petsmart or feed store near you you can pick up some kitten milk replacer. They need vitamins not found in whole cows milk.

We raised kittens from a few days old because their mother was hit by a car. We bought teeny tiny bottles and milk replacer from a pet store, and fed them every four hours. After they eat you have to stimulate them to go to urinate and what not with a wet washcloth. It's kinda gross but gotta do it. Their mom would still be doing this at their age. Kittens this young still need to be on milk full time, I don't think they can handle solid foods or even wet cat food yet.

Poor little kitties! Good Luck with them. All 3 of mine lived and made the friendliest pets.

We're in the same boat you are.

Yesterday, we stopped off at our local dumpster to unload some trash.

My son got out of the car & found 2 kittens (aproximately 4 weeks old), lying in the hot sun on the ground.

Their eyes were completly closed with pus.

What to do??

We brought them home & have them isolated, due to upper respiratory problems, (heavy breathing, sneezing).

I can't afford to take them to the vets.

It's been about 18 hours. This morning they are ravenously hungry ...drinking warm milk & eating cat food. The gray & white one is playing & purring. The orange one just looks at me as if to say "Please help me".

Their eyes are looking much better but not great. The gray & white one is doing much better than the little orange guy.

I had some left-over anti-biotic cream for the eyes & purchased steril eye wash.

I'm just concerned about distemper!! :|

Would an animal shelter just put them to sleep or take care of them??

Does anyone know the signs of distemper? I have 3 other inside-outside cats thus the isolation & constant hand washing.

I would be more worried about Leukemia with cats. I would keep them isolated for a week or two anyways. Distemper looks like a cold. Snotty noses and all. We found a kitten once and I called the vet and he said if it had anything it would have died. Kittens can't really get sick and live. Know what I mean? But it doesn't mean than can't be sick. Just more than likely not.

I think all these kittens on this thread may have gunky eyes because of the enviroments they came from. Not the cleanest homes. The stuff in the air (like at the dump).

How adorable chickenfeathers I looked up signs of distemper. We had kittens die of it when I was a kid. It was not fun

.
"It can take up to ten days before the first feline distemper symptoms develop.

Typical signs are: loss of appetite, depression, fever, vomiting and diarrhea. Constipation is possible too. This is followed by dehydration, pain and – in many cases - death."
From here----> distemper
I think it's pretty common. A few years ago the county shelter had an outbreak and was shut down for several weeks.

Judymae & Angie n Maine,

Thanks, so much, for your quick responses & info.

Since they are eating, drinking, & using the kitty box, we'll just keep doing our best & pray.

Since they have to be 8 weeks before they can get a distemper shot, I might be able to come up with the $$ by then!

Then you have a few weeks to look around for one of those Vaccination clinics they do all the time. Our local volunteer fire dept does one and so does Tractor Supply. Call around. Much cheaper that way!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a poem about abandonment. It's about a dog but it can apply to all critters abandoned by ignorant people:

On Abandonment

by Kathie Flood

A dog sits waiting in the hot midday sun;
too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.
He’s been there for days now with nothing to do
but sit by the road just waiting for you.
He can’t understand why you left him that day.
He thought you were stopping to take him to play.
He’s sure you’ll come back and that’s why he stays.
How long can he suffer? How many more days?
His legs have grown weak, his throat’s parched and dry.
He’s sick now from hunger; he falls with a sigh.
He lays down his head and closes his eyes.
I wish you could see how a waiting dog dies.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL POEM, made me bawl.

I had a mom cat bring me to her 2 kittens that she had birthed in the woods under my shed. They were a little older, just barely. 2 days later, mom cat disappeared. I lived in a small subdivision in a military town. Our humane Society and shelters are overloaded at all times. One of the babies had maggots coming out of her. The other was healthy. The sick one died the next day. My children never saw me cry like I did. My Fiona made it and she is one of the best cats I've ever loved.

PLEASE. I URGE EVERYONE--SPAY/NEUTER! Unless you are prepared to kindly care for ALL subsequent generations of your animals, do it. If just one of the offspring leaves your fold, then reproduces, then its offspring reproduces, etc, we are looking at animals that will be unwanted, abandoned, in the hands of people uncapable of caring. Realistically we cannot care for all of them, regarless of where we live.
