This thread has been very informational, I really hope it doesn't die!!!

Thanks for the interest folks. It is time to move on. We had hoped for a bit more participation on both the Java and the Jersey Giant units. But so be it.

Anyhow. The class outline called for the American Class to be done first. So, let's announce the next chapter. BTW, there is no sense of rush or time constraint. It is what it is. We'll eventually get to the English Class as well.

The next unit will continue with the American Class and will discus Miss Nettie Metcalf's birds, the Buckeye.

If everyone is ready, then off we go. The Buckeye.

LOL! The Java unit came up too quick. I've got much better questions, some answers to my former questions, and some new questions now that my Javas are getting older

Perhaps we could have a recap/revisiting/general American class discussion period when we get to the end of the American class, before we start with the Asiatics? (And maybe the Asiatics should be in a separate but related thread?)

This thread, to me, is different in that it puts an intense focus on many breeds, which is hugely valuable, to me, for learning to evaluate a chicken compared to its SOP regardless of breed. Which sounds odd, but I hope it makes sense. I.e. if my chosen breed emphasizes long backs, it helps to look at back lengths in other breeds.

More, please! :)

edited to add: Looking at breeds I never really thought about before is also eye-opening -- an "A ha" kind of thing -- seeing that lots of factors make up a breed, not just color and comb.

I completely agree. I have tried wading through the breed specific threads but they have so much detail and chatter and are so long its really more for folks that know and love the breed and not helpful to get a short synopsis.

I loved the first few breeds that were presented here. I now understand the difference between a Dominique and a Barred Rock. I only really went by the comb before. That sort of thing is so very useful! Even more honed down than the SOP for the breed.

In a nutshell, I would love to see a short tutorial for each breed presents. Something like these are the key features that make this breed unique and different and then state what the DQ flaws are or what breeders are struggling with to keep the breed up to breed standards. Keeping chatter to a minimum is very helpful although it does bump the thread up which helps keep it alive.

I would continue on with all of the breeds under one University umbrella and just have a mod come through and clean up the extraneous information as needed. IMO, the thread will be a more valuable and complete reference in the future if done that way.

Or maybe a photo of a really nice hen and roo with the salient points of that breed described - I really find the photos to be so helpful, both of good and not-so-good individuals
Yup. That is precisely the point of posting photos. They are educational devices or object lessons. This is not an online show thread. This is a teaching thread, 100%. Putting up a whole passel of photos without educational teaching or critique is of little to no value.

Well here is where I get to confess that I don't yet have a copy of the SOP

I am leaning closer and closer towards ordering, but in the meantime, if someone who has a copy wanted to post the SOP for the Buckeye, I'd be most grateful.
Have to be careful about posting SOPs. From what I hear, the APA frowns on having the SOP posted without their permission.
