I am learning.

The first thing that stuck out to me was her head. Couldn't nail exactly what was wrong other than it didn't look Orp like. Looks more Wyandotte like to me.

I noticed the coloring and cushion too, but the head really got my attention.

The British Standard calls for a smaller head, so that is one thing they are getting right in GB. our Standard calls for a bigger head. The head and the feather quality are pretty much the only differences in the two Standards.

Same here! I love that deep bowl that they should have, and too many do not have.

boy , you know it as soon as you pick them up.whole lot of bird in your hand...i think of all of thebirds i have, and you can count them on 2 hands..the blacks get a little deeper and wider every year..as soon as you pick them up you think yep....

I said that in my post. it is true of all breeds in the US.......especially the fad breeds, because they appeal to more beginners.

I added the buff plymouth pic for interest.because that seems to be a lot of what I see in today US buff.. I beleive allen amerrel has a picture of a female buff that could almost be used as a near perfect buff specimin..she just looked like what you would want to see in a close up photo..I have the pic, do not have permission to use it so wont..

Aveca.....the pic of the buff Rock is not accurate for many reasons . Starting at the comb, back, wings and tail. Shilling does a much better job of illustrating Rocks. This is probably based on an actual bird...along with all it's faults. (short back, tail angle etc.) The bottom line seems OK though and is a good way to illustrate the differences in the bottom line of Orps and Rocks..Orps are much deeper than Rocks.

Thank you for taking the time to look it over Walt.. I used it as a visual ..the middle male is what people need to train the eyes to see, not be fooled by wrong outline..it is point deduction in gr britian to produce the plymouth outline and breast as well as other standards..its that wonderful cobby big deep frame of the middle example that we are after.. ..

I beleive the brit buffs that Vickie has were belgium imports, probably handled more toward that standard..the actual buffs in britian right now are very different than these..if I can safley say because I did see them several years ago..very cohiney....i did not recognise them as a buff orp and yes there are a lot of complaint about it by breeders..some of the comments are , your going to take this too far and then you will have to take many steps backward to correct it..but if it is being rewarded in show ring as it is, that is the direction it will go..its all directed by show ring fad..ours went wrong way too..birds lost thier punch, the big cobby round frame turned into buff rock and wyandotte..if you do something like that , you have to be so careful and not turn a breed into another breed just because its buff color..i still blame it all on america lost its passion for poultry breeding for long time, right now its enjoying a huge rise in popularity..but it looks simple...it is not..anything but..

sadly we have to turn to books written in the turn of the century to help us understand what they were thinking..what they did ...hows and whys so few people have that knowlege today, they think they do... Poultry was a way of life around that time, they were so comfortable in that knowlege, we are far removed from it and the people who could give that kind of direction....., a lot of the mis direction is blamed on new comers or this or that..I beleive its lack of proper instruction..some breeders just hand over birds to people assuming that they know what they are doing..a little instruction to help them would be good...your always going to have the guy that doesnt listen but the better ones will listen and learn..
