i agree with all that is being said too, and if you are still looking for some bantams i have some. i started out getting some from cat stasevich and jim zook. i will have some nice young ones twards spring. here is one that i hatched last spring. he is from a pair that i got from cat. this pic doesnt show his hackle shading that much
here is one that show a better pic of his shading
4hmom, thanks for the offer and beautiful bird. You're kinda far, I was hoping one of these guys down here within driving distance of me to save some $ on shipping. I'll keep you in mind if anything changes, though. Thanks again.
if you can get some cubalaya from saladin then you should get them. he has nice birds. he explains the faults and any less than standard of perfection things. i was very happy to get some black cubalayas from him. he told me about the red hackle and tail feathers in the males. well i knew if they were easy to breed then everyone would have some and they are rare of the rare. i was so happy with them that after i had chicks and more chicks, i passed some chicks on first then a black cock and a stag on to another breeder.
Mont was over at the house a year ago and picked up some birds. She's a wonderful person. Then back in October, Jesus went up to her place and helped her go over her birds to select breeders. She'd be a good source for chicks.
Flashy wheaten cockerel. Late May hatch. I posted him as 15/16th cubalaya. I'm sorry I wasn't more careful, but he's only 3/4th cubalaya. His sire is not the deep golden cock, but the blue wheaten in my avatar. Mother is still the same. Sorry, I don't want to mislead anyone with wrong information.
mkes senes to get birds within driving distance i would too if there was anyone close but im in the middle of colorado and as far as i know we are the only ones in colorado with bantam cubalayas that are quality. and for some of you guys that have been breeding cubalayas do you think an outcross to a red earlobed, long bodyed, long legged ohiki would help get the size down without loosing too much type or is there any thing you think would be better or should i just keep breeding small to small.
I'd probably not go with the ohiki. I know some of the cuba bantams come a bit large, but I would think either breeding small to small or using any proper size bantam breed as an outcross would reduce the size. I know some other breeders have used bantam shamo, malay, yokohama, and cornish, etc.. on theirs. "Oriental type birds" broadly speaking. Phoenix would be ok except for the white earlobes which are a pain to get rid of. OEGB may be ok as well, but the tail will be messed up for quite a while after that. I know Zook has been trying to make/perfect/shrink other colors in the bantams, he could probably give you some suggestions as to what approach to use.
