Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

His tail as it is looks good for 4 months. He looks similar to some of Zook's whites he used to have. If the tail would "drop off" he would also look better, that is something that I will cull very hard for this season.
Does he have a yokohama-ish look or is it just me? I have had to fight the high tails here too, but I think I'll have a good selection this year. The chicks are still young but they look good to me.
How do you expect to get the slope of their backs up to where you want it?
Do you know where the large comb is coming from?
You will find at least two tails in the existing strains: let's call them the 'drop off' and the 'slope.' The drop off comes from the Schmudde line and I've always thought it a throw-back to the Shamo in them, but it is very impressive because of the seemingly multitude of feathers (appearance only). On the other hand, the slope is what is seen in the old Schillings Black and White drawing. You will see the slope tail in the Courson type birds and in the Finch birds.

I have both and will continue, most likely to get both in my breeding, but my artistic nature prefers the slope to the drop off.

I really really like this tail on this white bird. That is not to say you fellows are wrong in any way, just my preference that's all.

Doc my only concern is the flow from the back to the tail being messed up by the extremely steep angle to the back.

PS: nice to see you around :)

the slope being like gallorojo's avatar of the schilling cubalaya? the drop being like horst schmudde bb reds? on the schilling avatar would the tail and wing still be standard and showable if the tail was raised a degree and the wing a hair longer and closer to the hocks? if the drop tail was achieved by only breeding shamo in, then wouldn't the slope tail be the more cubalayish of the two?

Yes the slope tail in that avatar. It is possible that both tails always existed, I've only seen it in birds that carry Schmudde blood; thus, my conclusion that it is from the Shamo. However, this may not be the case. No real definitive answer. Standard just talks about it being below the horizontal.

I've had only a white pair and one wheaten hen when starting, so the chicks from other folks eggs have been fun to watch. Here's a closeup of one I think will be wheaten:

These 3 hatched in late June. The one on the right is from eggs sent by Shamoman. The others I am unsure, the hen cleaned up their shells. I suspect the black cockerel in the center is a Black Jap/cuba cross.
