Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Come on guys, I need some input. I'm torn about getting that white pair, do you think I should do it or will it prove to be to hard to get them back on track? Please.
I am looking also, and my decision is to buy the best birds (in my opinion), that I can find. I don't mind traveling a goodly ways, or payinig a little more because I intend to keep them for a good while. You need to start with birds as close to your ideal as you can get. For me, I just don't have enough breeding know how to start with poor quality birds and spend years unhappy with them and trying to make them into something I could have started with. All birds are going to need some improvement and that is challenge enough for me...stan

Carolina has been to my place and picked up a few birds in the past. I think Jesus also took her a Zook cock. Did you talk with Jesus, Caroline or Billy Sumner?

Glad to hear Danny kept back some birds. That is not what I had understood. If they are his old line then they stretch all the way back to his father.

My oldest was at the show and should be headed home today.
No, the only Cuba person I spoke with was Danny. I did not know how to go about running Caroline down in person and I was satisfied to get her contact info. I did not know about Billy or Jesus. Maybe they'll be at Barnwell?? Not sure of that date but heard that it is in March?? Maybe I'll try to plan a trip up there then, long as I don't go up during Holy Week......Didn't ask Danny about where his birds came from, he was cooking at the time and pretty busy........stan

Good points Stan. Cubalaya, I think I will have to do it then. We'll see. Thanks for the posts guys. Gallo and Saladin, I would still like to hear what you guys have to say, too.

Look, ultimately this is your decision to make. If it's worth your time and gas, then go for it. I have used plenty of less than ideal birds when breeding, but, I have tried to compensate the fault of one with the strong points of the other-, or, simply, breeding a good bird in one area to a less ideal bird in the same trait to hopefully improve the quality in question. I can't predict exactly what you will get from breeding these birds, you may get some nice ones, who knows? I have seen some very nice Cubalayas from the hatcheries. I have also seen some total junk, too. More junk than nice, but, the nice are still there. If you buy a boxful ( 25-30) You may end up with a nice trio. Maybe. Or maybe not, that's the trouble. Everyone has culls , but, if you bought , say a trio of birds from a breeder for $75, you would have from the start some nice birds. If you bought a box of chicks at a hatchery, you would spend, say , roughly $100.00 on the chicks plus shipping, plus whatever you put into them in feed and bedding, and you may, or may not end up with anything good. I guess my point is that if breeder birds are to had, you are better off getting them if at all possible, assuming that they are indeed better than the hatchery birds. I would say the birds you are thinking about are roughly hatchery quality, hard to say since I can't see pics from all the angles, but that seems about right. If they are gifts, and you are up for the drive, then go for it. You can always buy more birds later if you like the breed.

I have an accident, that is dun red( half cubalaya). I have pictures on my camera but I have to wait until after our poultry show to do it so that there is room on the computer without the threat of losing the show secretary database. He is actually pretty nice except his head.

Sorry Black Pullet

The cock bird has decent weight( not going to guess) but hackle color is a struggle. His is dark and he grew little black flecks here and there. I also wish he was a little taller(more leg and thigh length). The hens are a strange color this year, the came back light and splotchy. The one hen is standing weird. The white cockerel is going to be my sole white breeder, I am set back by losing my second best male(still have #3) and my best black pullet and my best white pullet. So my birds should be fine for breeding after survival of the fittest has taken its course. I am weeding out the weak, even if they would have been my primary breeder choice. The black pictured is a sorry bird. She lacks breed type, but I'm limited with the blacks. My cubalayas never win anyways here with these darn Chung and Tune and Bundy Shamo/Asil, and all the Sumatras that are increasing in popularity.

I asked Terry Britts old partner who judged here what happened to Terry's birds and he hasn't the slightest idea. But he did know that they were from Sam and a couple hens came from the SW( Arizona I believe). This is where all of my size came from, so primarily Sam. I wish I could find the rest of Terry's birds because they were silhouettes of Sams. He's judging here at the ABA national so I'll ask him. Sam actually wanted to know too, because e says he needs a fertility boost on his old birds, so maybe I can or Jim Sallee can find where they went.
