Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

The average weight on my straight cubalaya cockerels last year at 8 months was 4 to 4 lb. 8 ozs. I had 2 exceptions and those 2 weighed 5lb. 8 ozs.

this is kind of off topic but have any of you ever gotten and bbreds that look like they dont have the mahogany gene if so could you post a picture. i got a pullet this year that has light colored hackles to where they are inbetween a bbreds and a silvers. and every where else the cinnimon would be it is more light brown colored.

Got a digital scale yesterday so I thought I would weigh my biggest Ideal Cockerel and see what he weighed. He was hatched on June 13th 2012, so he is a little over seven and a half months old. He weighed 2lb 13.6 ounces. I was wondering how this compared to a normal sized cuba at this age?

Must be a "sibling" of my two. They were also hatched 6/13. I've not weighed them. Not sure how I would get them to stay still anyway.
The face on the girl from Florida is much redder than what mine show. Comb is bigger too.

She might be silver wheaten.

On weighing birds- I use 2 systems. Small birds go into a container, container goes onto a postal scale, subtract the weight of the container. You will want to use a small dark container so they don't jump around. Large birds go into a pillow case or feed sack and then the sack is hung from a hanging vertical fish scale. My methods eliminate the need for the birds to stand still.

All my straight bred bb reds males have been between 4-5 pounds. I have had males from the whites/ blacks/ spangleds/pyles come between 5-7, they are generally bigger here for me. A 4.8 cockerel is still within the standard, not ideal, not great, but within acceptable limits. If the males don't even reach 3 pounds that's a serious problem.

It is not hard to keep them still, you can either hypnotize them or simply tuck their head under their wing and rock them like a baby for a few seconds. They will fall asleep and you can lay them on their side (head on the bottom). The trick is to not touch their feet when you lay them down.

i wouldn't think so bucause both parents are bbred. also there is no silver. could you get a silver/ golden out of bbred.

Hi 4hmom,
What you may have is a wheaten/ duckwing mix there. They tend to have the golden neck feathers in the females. A tell tale sign would be striping in the chick down vs a pure clean yellow.

she was pure yellow and if it helps she is out of malay cubalaya crosses from cat. not sure on percentages but i am sure they are mostly cubalaya.

Welp Chick Update!

Here it is for those who are interested in the progress of my Welp chicks. They were hatched on November 25th or 26th, so they are a little over 3 months old. They all pretty much look the same. I have 12 cockerels and 9 pullets. Took these photos with my smart phone so they are not as good as my usual shots.

3 month old Welp BBRed Cubalaya cockerel. Weight 2 pounds 7 ounces.

Three month old Welp Weaten Cubalaya pullet. Weight 1 pound 12 ounces.
