Forgot to mention...regular hexagon chicken wire is not good enough for raccoons...they will tear through it with ease...I would also like it to have a raised coop in it...with an enclosed pen...

What is everyone's favorite places to buy good quality cubalayas? Also,how should I house them for winter,as I live in New York...so our winters are pretty harsh...

I purchased my first trio of Golden Duckwings from Cubalaya, who started this thread. He is so very knowledgeable, and was happy to answer all my newbie dumb questions. (I'm very much a greenhorn when it comes to anything beyond barnyard mutts.) I originally purchased a male/female pair. When the pullet died (my fault), he was super nice and arranged to send me two more little pullets. Both shipments made it all the way to Texas in great shape.

I have rather a large flock, but the Cubalayas are among my few top favorites. They are absolutely gorgeous, and very pleasant to work with and be around. Very easygoing. I can hardly wait to start hatching some babies from them.

What colors does he have? Also,what is he charging? I'm glad that I can find good breeders...my only issue is that not many New Yorkers are breeding a lot of the breeds I'm getting into,including cubalayas. Thank you

I wasnt really looking for specific colors...I don't really know if I would be able to get any anyways...my mom would be the one to give the okay on that...I bought a pair of standard bbr's from a guys with the last name Zook...I can't remember his first name though...but they are still young...I was just curious about what breeders were out there and what colors they had...I am looking around to see what people have got is all...I really like the breed though...especially my pullet...she follows me around everywhere when I go outside. My mom is supportive with my chickens for mainly one reason...which is that I'm fifteen...and there are a lot worse things I could be into...and I LOVE my birds...we have 90+ chickens right now...hahaha

Jim Zook? He is probably the best breeder of Cubalaya on the east coast for sure. I have whites, wheatens, blue wheatens and am working on getting some solid blacks. I don't currently have any for sale as I want them to mature more before I sell them. If I would not use them for breeders, I won't sell them for breeders either. I also have what I'm calling a fireworks color, none for sale in that line as they are difficult to get to survive to adulthood.

They seemed to really like this one as it had wire netting on the floor and the ground hardly froze underneath it.


This one is 6' x 12'. I closed of the far end gable and left this end open, the Cubalaya were fine in it in sub-zero temps.

Here are a few ideas.
This one is 5 feet deep and 8 feet long. Metal on three sides and 1/2" x 1" wire netting on the doors. Definitely raccoon proof.




With some chicks in it.


Metal all around except for the window, it is a clear pvc type of material. I ended up putting 1/2" x 1/2" of netting behind it as extra insurance against raccoons.

Those are definitely some nice coops,I will have to see about having some built. Also,is the fireworks color like the fourth pic in your post of young birds? I thought those were really cool. A friend of mine is working on a breed of chicken called a Papiseed to represent New York...her silver color looks a lot like that...and everybody wants them...she one time had a person who wanted her main rooster,and was offering like $30-35...but she turned it down,because she needed him for her breeding project...she hasn't quite finished yet,because she is having raccoon issues and other predators, but she is making a huge attempt to get them an actual breed...does Jim Zook sell his for good pricing? He sold me my pair for $25...but he said that he was doing it cheaper with youth to get the youth more interested in the breed...he also did that with the pair of Asil bantams I bought from him.

He often sells them for $100 - $250 a breeding pair, so you certainly got a good deal.

Those are really pretty

when you are ready to start selling in the future,you will definitely have to let me know. If those are fireworks,then what is the other one? I'm talking the cockerel in the fourth pic of your young ones. Also,I'm glad I didn't get charged $100-250...otherwise,I might not have even been able to buy them...I didn't know they were that much. Are his birds pretty good stock? I've never owner cubalayas until this pair that I have...also,I would post a pic of them,but we are having really rainy weather right now...so them,along with my other chickens don't really look their best...
