Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

I thought we had already answered this one? The simplest thing for you to do by far is to just buy whites from Sandhill. No matter how bad some people may say they are, it will take you longer to make the white from BB Red than it will to improve the whites you get from the hatchery. They really are not all that bad, not perfect, but can be improved with a few years of hard work. Of course you can make whites or blacks from BB Red. It will take you 5-10 years and hundreds of chicks to do it, even when using something similar like shamos, asils, etc for the color outcross. It's hard to get rid of the red in the males when trying to make whites or blacks from a BB Red. It's much easier to make one solid color into another, such as white to black, black to blue, even white or black to buff. It's very hard to take a muticolored, patterned, bird and make it one solid clean color. It can be done, but the point is, other people have already put years into this process, even if you have to wait years for the birds, and pay a fair amount for them, you will still come out ahead. I have a few whites and black both, but, none for sale now, and both are best considered works in progress. The best type is going to be in good specimens of BB Reds.

I guess to answer your question another way, you can't just make whites or blacks out of BB Red alone without essentially divine intervention. You would have to cross them with a black or white bird to gain the color, unless you were lucky enough to get a black or white sport. You'll hit the lottery before that happens, so you need to buy a black or white something to start with. Preferably a Cubalaya, but, barring that, another oriental type breed.

Why doesnt everyone do an update on their birds, and maybe post some current or future plans, what you are working on and with, progress, ect. Just to keep the thread going. I just can't get enough of these cubalayas in the meantime I get some. Anyone near eastern Tennessee that I could get some quality stock from? Or that ship? pm me if so.

this year i should hatch out the best whites that i have ever owned. will hatch a few blacks only keeping solid black ones. i plan on giving my gold duckwing cock a couple of new hens. trying to hatch some blue cubalaya and spangled cubalaya. have a nice pen of brown reds whose chicks should be excellant.

My white cock, maybe 18 months old? Still growing in his tail after the molt. He is multiple spurred, but has one large on each leg, flanked by 2 stubby ones, hard to see in the pic. This bird is not from my breeding, got him from a well known oriental breeder. He is the father of all my whites, spangles, mottles, pyles, etc. I plan on using him again next near, but paired with new females. He is about 5.25-5.50 pounds-could still be larger, but well sized compared to my BB Reds and Duckwings.

Here is a BB Red Cubalaya cock. The APA standard calls this BB RED, technically, it's wheaten, but, a dark cinnamon wheaten, not the same wheaten as in Marans, or Faverolles.

The white spot on the white cocks ear is the feather tuft that covers the actual ear. It should be white. It's not white in facial skin, it's feathers.

Look at the BB Red cock above-he has the same tuft, only it's light brown. They all have that tuft, the color should match the color of the bird in general. Maybe it just stands out more on the white cock?
