Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

I use one of those old fashioned scales they used to weigh babies on. It's got a big enough platform for them to stand on, and if they're particularly flighty, I put a cage on the scale first, set it to 0 and then weigh the cage and bird. :) It's not SUPER accurate, but it gets you to a 1/4 lb without a problem :)

Here's how I weigh mine. Very small ones I will put into a coffee can, and weigh them on a digital postal scale. Medium to large ones I put in an empty feed sack and use a hanging type fish weight scale. Very large birds I will just hold and step on the bathroom scale.

Woods and feathers- On brooding-Most of mine will lay a decent amount of eggs before going broody, this actually is a nice thing about them. Typically mine will start to think about brooding between late April and early June here, when the days get long and weather gets warm. They will then have laid for me from Late Jan-Mid Feb until they brood, so, maybe 3-4 months of laying, then, they can set for me when it starts to get very hot. When it gets hot they would quit laying anyway, so they may as well just be broody then. For really early broodies, I have mixed bantams and other orientals that will brood earlier, I actually already have 4 chicks out and another hen setting, but none are Cubas.

MNSheperdess, where did you get your whites? What do think about them? Can we see more pictures? The avatar picture looks good, would like to see more.

I love all the pictures on this thread, so here's my contribution.

This is the white cockerel. His feathers are stained by the orange/pink colored "mountain sand" in their dust bath. I have him down as an April birthday, right cubalaya?

Here's another flock shot that gives an idea of relative size. The big mutt cockerel next to the wheaten was born in early September, half cubalaya, half production red. When he stands up tall with his tail low he is actually a very impressive sight.

That white stag is a nice looking bird. No significant problems or issues to me, no DQ's or anything, a nice start . It might be nice for his legs to be a bit longer, but, really, that's just nit picking on my part. I'd prefer longer legs on my birds, but, the young man I got my start from liked very short legs, as long as they make you happy, they are your birds.... I do like his comb, seems close to the SOP description. Good luck with your hatching this year, hatch some great whites for us!! Thanks for sharing your flock!!
