Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Pics
Cuba, yeah, hopefully we can do a trade this fall. The thai are a dark cinnamon wheaten, just like the Cubalayas. Personally, I'm glad I got my mottled cockerel back-what a cool bird!!

Cashdl, I can see how some of your Araucanas do look like tailess Cubas, if you have a 9 pound cleanfaced, long tailed Aruacana, well, that would probably work out fine given enough time, like anything else. I'm just not really clear on all the Aruacana genetics, and most I see are practically bantams. With the right bird, I guess it could be a workable choice-a large oriental will always be best, of course, but if you can't get one of those, you have to work with what you have got. Yours are handsome birds in any case..

Hi everyone, Just wanted to mention that I'll probably be in Atlanta Georgia tomorrow. So, if anyone has any bantam cubas and are in or around the area, please pm me. thanks

mine is going pretty good. hatched some blacks, some whites and a few brown reds. even fewer gold duckwings and they are all males. really wanted some silver wheaton pullets to hatch. have 3 hens sitting on eggs now. will do one hatch of brown reds this fall.

I have about 40 chicks out as of now, and I am aiming for 60-70 this year, depending on how long they keep laying, and how many hens set for me. I have 8 hens setting as of now, so a lot more chicks are on the way. I have wheatens, blacks, whites, and probably mottleds chicks now. Probably some birchen as well, and some "red" project ones. No duckwings for me this year. My goals for the year are to get some with great heads and great tails. This is a hard breed to perfect.

I have 9 chicks left out of the ones hatched at school. My two Marans are monopolizing the nests thus far. I just pull the Marans eggs and eat them - not like they can be confused with a cubalaya egg! My big black copper hen had 18 cubalaya eggs under her, but a couple were lost to a tussle with the other broody Marans. So she is isolated on a dozen, and I gave 3 to the other hen to help her start another clutch. When she gets a nice bunch I'll isolate her.

My two cubalaya hens have been laying like champs since winter. No sign of brooding from them yet.

A couple of the white incubator babies are looking mighty fine, with lower tail set than the parents.

"Left" is euphemism for some unfortunate results of school hatching. I think the incubator was opened too much. We had a lot that were "sticky" and died at hatching with the membrane stuck like concrete, and 3 were born with curled feet. One has completely recovered to where I am unsure which one it was. Two were getting picked on and not thriving and were culled.

They are about a month old now. My big BCM broody has a dozen eggs set to hatch next week. I think she could take another 6 eggs easy, but I gave some to another hen to keep them happy.

The picture looks like a red pyle pullet to me. I had some like that last year, actually, that is the Old English type red pyle, based on duckwing/wildtype, not wheaten. I also had some wheaten red pyles, they look like regular wheatens but with white tails and wing tips, the pullets, that is.
I don't know everything of course, and I could be wrong, but, for now I'd bet OE type red pyle pullet. Keep us posted!!
