Cubalaya Thread For Sharing Pics and Discussing Our Birds

Pics
I finally have more pics of my surprise BBR cockerel. I know his reds have too many black streaks, but he has a nice full tail that he holds down better than any of my other males.

His daddy is my white cock and mom is wheaten.

Here is the same 4 month old cockerel with one of the Asil/Tuzo/Jap hens I hope to pen with him in the spring. Unless I can purchase some black cubalaya hens...

She usually holds her tail lower, she is pretty keyed up here.

Your wheaten cockerel may be a brown red. Does he have any red in the wing primaries or are they all black? What color was he as a chick? Wheaten should be some version of yellow, brown reds some version of black as chicks. I'm just wondering because he is very dark, has dark legs, and is out of one of your whites.

As a chick he was black, with a little white on the wing tips. He has no white anywhere now. His wing primaries are all black now, but his breast is shot through with red/brown. His shoulder patches are a dark mahogany.

Genetically is it a mistake to mate him with black hens, hoping for a few black offspring?

Don't get me wrong, I look forward to seeing the offspring. Those gals have stout heads, upright posture and somewhat decent tails. They're what I have.

If he was black as a chick he is certainly a brown red. Actually if you want blacks, using a brown red is far better than using a wheaten. A lot of black birds are based on melanized brown red/ birchen. So if blacks are your final goal he is a better start than a wheaten would be.

Also, on the offspring of this cockerel of yours with the black pullets. You will get mostly pure black pullets, a few may end up as very black brown reds. The cockerels will be mostly brown reds, maybe a few will be black with a little red leakage in the hackle and saddle feathers. So, you won't get any pure black males, but, this is still better than using a wheaten.
