Cuckoo Ameraucanas

hmm I didn't know that. I thought about a Mottled Bantam project as well I guess not

I think a Mahogany Ameraucana would be really pretty as well.

I would imagine it would be relatively easy to breed Mottled LF to Bantam Blacks to make f1 splits then cross the f1s back together and start selecting for size. I don't know if it's worth it if they can never get recognized due to shank color. I don't wan't to hijack the Cuckoo thread though.

yeah it would be simple. I don't think its technically hijaking since we are talking about shank color relating to, in a way, the cuckoo shank color.

You guys are great! It will be interesting to know what color eggs your hen lays, Rancher.

It would be interesting to breed a bird that has the robin's egg blue eggs, the barring, the cheeks, muffs, beards and the size.

'Course, then it has to breed true. Hmmmm.

Happy Country Hens

I've got eggs from Cuckoo Leghorns x Black Ameraucanas bred back to cuckoo leghorns now. I will be looking for a good barred roo that most closely matches the Ameraucana standard, and will put him over black Ameraucana hens. The F1 generations of crosses was very interesting. Many were very Ameraucana looking with the exception of the slate legs and pea comb. (They get a weird "bubblegum" comb with this cross, some smaller than others.)

The breeder I got them from was aiming primarily for a good blue egg laying, barred bird that could be sexed at hatch. I hope to focus more on bringing in the classic Ameraucana characteristics and darkening the egg color, as even these F1 eggs were VERY light.

I have a Cuckoo Ameraucana Project Roo, He has the correct pea comb, muffs, beard, and eye color. The only problem are his legs(white with black spots). I wish I had more but he is the lonesome dove out of the chicks I purchased. There were cuckoo hens which didn't make it to adulthood

. I have some black pullets that I thought of crossing with him just to see what I might get......hmmm.

I love his coloring. I am not shooting for something standard. I just love his uniqueness in color

I love the idea of barred/cuckoo ameraucanas. We had some silver laced EE's when we crossed a SLW with black ameraucana hens, nice birds.
And someone correct me if I'm wrong but Im almost certain that the standard doesnt require needing approval of the breed club to get a variety accepted, just requires so many breeders with so many birds working on/showing them for 5 years.

From my understanding back when Ameraucanas were originally proposed to the standard there was someone out of Ohio that had Barred Ameruacanas that had good type and coloring except they had yellow legs. Also, there are many breeds that have different leg colors for different varieties and like he said you dont need ABC approval you just need APA or ABA approval and meet their req for a new variety.

That is what is required based on the APA standard however the standards comitte will also inform you that the final determination will also rest with the breed club for support.
