Cuckoo Maran mix?

One of the Marans chicks started laying a couple of days ago. The eggs are very light brown, more of a beige. What a disappointment.

From what I have seen and read, cuckoo marans lay the lightest egg of the marans, but it should still be darker than most normal brown egg layers. You might want to think about looking into a breeder of marans for the correct birds/ egg color, instead of a hatchery.

I think your Marans mix is a pullet, but she's got a very developed comb for only 16 weeks. My Marans combs have only just started to redden up in only some birds, and they're 19 weeks old.

Give that hatchery hell!

I was obviously ripped off but I have to say the EE rooster turned out to be so sweet. He loves to just hang out on my lap. My granddaughter loves him.

A lot of hatcheries mix in BR into their Cuckoo Marans to increase egg production.

Or, mix something barred, ie, BR, Dominique, and whatever fudge the white legs, smudge the barring and call it a Cuckoo Marans. The real test is whether it will lay a nice dark egg. Very few do which lends little credibility that the birds sold were true. Popularity does this. I'd have no idea, but my gut says that the number of true Marans isn't anywhere near the number of birds sold as if they are. Shrug.

I bought chicks from a lady selling Cuckoo Marans pullets on craigs list. I bought 4 of them ended up with 3 roos all mutts. She told me she would send me my money back of course she never did. Buyer beware I guess when not buying from a reputable breeder.

This hatchery supplied our local farm stores this year. I placed an order privately thinking it was reputable. Live and learn.
