Culling a chick-advice

what do you consider to be acceptable way to cull? NOBODY on here i don't believe WANTS to end a pets life, what i consider to be prohibited to own a pet, is a station wagon load of kids with parents that show up at the animal shelter , children lacking in care so you KNOW the pet will be treated as such, yet you still have to allow anyone to adopt , unless there on the list of KNOWN abusers.....I use to work for animal control, there is just nothing more dishearting than sending a pet off with a real bad feeling, just cuz they want the biggest baddest dog around......asking questions to be sure you do it the most effective way yet showing expressed concern for a baby chic, nothing wrong with that, i sure hope you didn't mean what you said !

I used to work in a pet store too! While we never had to cull mammals, our specialty was fish and we often had to get rid of the sick ones. Freezing is mean and wrong with any animal! Even though it sounds bad, stunning it by doing some kind "whack" to the head is best. Culling is difficult and emotionally hard, but is sometimes necessary. I hope for your sake you don't have to cull, but if you do, DO NOT FREEZE!

Due to the topic, I have to say this. Oh, and for anyone who has fish and you have to kill it (not already dead) please don't flush it until after you "whack" it. Flushing is worse than freezing because of all the chemicals in the toilet water and how disorienting it is. Okay I know this is a chicken forum so I'll get off my soap box, but had to put it in there.

Last thing, good luck with your chick, I hope all turns out well.

I'm sad to see one loose it's life because of a difference...I've seen lots of wild life (pig and deer here on our property) live with a bag leg that was tangled up and distroyed by barbed wire...sooo it's possible she might just be a fun little chick with a funky one leg hop?

My dad amputated 1 back leg off 2 kittens with a pocket knife and sewed them up himself because when they were born the cord was wrapped around the legs and they couldn't use them anymore the first kittens to go were the 3 legged ones, kinda weird my dad says he hates cats.

I overdid it. I wanted to make sure that she was going to die the first time. I used a plastic kitty litter container (the box that you can buy tons of litter in that have lids) but any airtight container will work. Then, I put 1/2 cup baking soda in a sandwich sized rubbermaid storage tub (for the volume of liquid that bubbled I needed a bigger container). Then, I put her on a couple of paper towels on the other side. When I was a close to ready I was ever going to be I poured around 1/2 cup vinegar in the tupperware and shut the lid. I put our gallon sized container of vinegar on top to ensure a tight fit with the lid. Finally, I set the timer for 5 minutes as I had read at one of the veterinary medicine euthanasia sites that it was a good time to make sure it had taken effect. I never heard a peep out of the box and when I came back it was done. (On a side note, I spent those 5 minutes snuggling the other 5 chicks.) She is currently in the freezer ina ziplock awaiting plantation into my garden.
