Culling a chick??

I had to cull my first chick this spring too. It sucked. I decided to go with the same method as I use to butcher roos, which is to break their neck using a broomstick. Except with a chick you can use your hands. Unfortunately the head often comes completely off with chicks, but they don't seem to suffer. It's hard. It was REALLY hard to work up the nerve to do it, but I guess I feel stronger now that I did what needed to be done.

It seems like these type discussions are always about the same, couldn't we get a sticky about this sort of thing??? Afterall, (and unfortunately) culling chicks IS a rather important part of raising chicks.

thank you for all the replies...this seems to be quite the touchy subject among everyone. everyone has their own views on what is right and what is wrong.

"Crip" actually passed on her own...i went to find a bag to put her in after I culled...and when I came back into the room, she had stopped breathing...I hope it was painless.

I am glad it was finally left to the sweet girl to pass on her own though. I hope it was painless too and I hope she sees her rainbow bridge scattered with mealworms and other goodies

Keeping you in my thoughts, either way you should feel good about everything you did to help. Heck the fact you belong to BYC and seek advice is enough in itself to know you are a great chick mommy.

I had to cull one the other day and I did what a friend of mine had to do years ago with diseased cockatiels... Soak a paper towel in lighter fluid, place the towel in a zip lock baggy and put the chick in the baggy.. close the baggy and get most of the air out.. The chick should be dead pretty quick.. I didnt time it, but after I placed the chick in the bag, I went back in the house.. I went out a few minutes later and the chick was dead..
It worked and it was quick... I figured it was the least painless and quickest way I could do it....

The fastest and easiest way I found for the young ones is to use an old spring mouse trap on their neck. You know, the kind that are known to break fingers.

i have gotten A LOT of ideas for next time. i hope it doesn't happen again..but i need to prepare myself that it will. with raising and hatching chicks, there are bound to be ones that you have to cull.

my fiance says that if i have to do it a couple times....it will get less painful for me.

it just stinks that it has to happen at all.

actually the gas pipe technique is pretty humane, and much easier psychologicaly. Every year there are thousands of accidental human suicides from people whose tailpipes are blocked up without them knowing it, if there were painful pollutants they would probably realize that they couldn't breath and get out of the car, instead they slowly fall asleep. Sorry to be so, creepy, i guess. Another method that works well is engine starter fluid, put the bird in a ziplock bag, put a paper towel over it, spray plenty of starter fluid in and seal the bag, the bird is gone in like 10 seconds, plus they get wikid high, like the idiots who use it as an inhalant drug, so the bird dies happy. I used to use this method all the time, i'm not 100% on the details so do some research, but if i were you this is what i'd do. Cutting the head off will be quick and painless, but only for the bird, i can remember when i took out my first bird like this, i couldn't get the image out of my head for weeks... (i was like 14, give me a break)
