Karen, I tried using nipple waterers but couldn't get my chickens to use them. Maybe you have to start when they are chicks? I've also tried the cups, which work fine. I liked that the water jug was large and enclosed. But those little cups would get pretty dirty and I had to clean them out every day. Not very different than cleaning out the waterers every day anyway. I quit using them because they froze in the winter leaving the chickens without water at all.

I think @pennyJo1960 has had better luck with nipples.

You can put a submersible aquarium heater in the buckets. I attach mine to a thermoplug so it only comes on during subfreezing temperatures.

It actually was a heated bucket. It wasn't the bucket of water that froze, just the water in the cups.

Anyway, I just use regular watering buckets now and I monitor them and change them out on cold snowy days. It's a hassle, but luckily, we don't get very many of those. I suppose if I lived in a colder climate, I would find a way. This works for me.

But, you could tell her about your experience with the nipples and how they have worked for you. Like, especially, how you got the chickens to use them.

I had a water line laced on three sides of the coop.

This is why I'm looking at nipples or cups for watering my chickens.

Temperature is in the 80s.

Every time i went into the coop, i would tap on the nipples so some water would come out. After a while one would get the idea , then the others would imitate her.
