GM BYC Fam,

So im missing my best boys today. I had a flock of 4 that were all slaughtered by coyotes when my dad left the gate open (accidentally) overnight a few years ago. Needless to say, i still am unsure as to the breed of these wonderful chickens. I had two boys two girls, i know thats not a great ratio, but my boys were very docile and friendly and the second one was very submissive. He acted as another hen in the flock and did not breed the two females.

Anyways. Ive attached pics of the beauts. The males were very large. Heavy and meaty--about 10lbs or so fully grown, and very widebodied. Ive had chicken and non chicken people tell me they are some of the largest chickens they have ever seen. So maybe that will help. No feathers on feet, whatsoever.
The breeder (on craigslist) told me they are Buff Orpingtons, i got them as day olds, and then they got redder as they got older. But i dont think theyre red enough to be rhodies??? Idk. Ive considered they might be cross breeds, as well. TBH i am wondering if i can track down the breeder again and show her pictures and say "i want these again" :old

Thank you!!!
M:bun

I agree they are not Rhode Island Reds, nor are they New Hampshire Reds. They are more red than a Buff Orpington should be but their legs appear to be white? Which does indicate an Orpington. Red Orpingtons would have white legs also but the chances of you stumbling across them are fairly remote. I would guess they are probably a cross.

thanks all! i didnt actually realize that red orpingtons are a thing, but i just looked them up and that is exactly what my babies looked like. Im not saying they are, i dont think they are. I am leaning towards someone crossed BO's and RIR or something similar. If thats the case, i know what i have to do! :p

Cheers!

i know the lady DID tell me they are english BO's so i know that the english variety are larger, so that was always my explanation for the size and wide bodiedness, which i suppose still holds. heres a pic of one of my hens feet

Okay, I thought they looked slate. But the new pic the legs look pretty white. That hen in the new pic also looks fairly buff. :pop
yeah, she was my lightest colored hen. she is only 3 months in this picture tho, so she did get darker with age. i was just trying to get a good pic of their legs. wish i had taken more pics whilst they were still alive....:th
