Curious- what are the benefits of following people?

I deleted my original comment because some people don't understand my humour.

As has been said already, I think it's just a way to show appreciation for a member and their postings. I don't think there's any benefits to "following" someone exactly.

I'm glad this was posted. I am not into Facebook so I'm not all that well informed about the "followers." I don't see myself as all that interesting and have always felt a bit uncomfortable at the thought of someone following me.
