Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

Disney + now has Hamilton. Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theater in 2016, this is the original stage production, with the (mostly) original cast, including its creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, in the title role. Originally slated to go into theaters in 2021, it has instead gone directly to streaming because coronavirus.

If you don't like musicals, you'll probably want to skip this one, though it has won a bunch of awards. The musical styling has a little something for everyone, from hip-hop and rap to more conventional Broadway show tunes. The casting took the rather unconventional direction of using non-white actors in most of the major roles; Thomas Jefferson in particular will never be the same for me. Even though there is an intermission, you will probably use the pause button occasionally for potty breaks or whatever, because this show is two and a half hours long.

Having listened to the soundtrack many times, I was eager to see the show, and I wasn't disappointed. However, as usual, I found myself feeling a bit depressed at the end; I don't know if I'm just tired out from all that energy for so long, or if it's because the main character dies (I don't think that counts as a spoiler; after all, at the very beginning, Aaron Burr introduces himself as "the d*** fool that shot him"). Won't stop me from watching it again, though.

Are folks getting brave enough to go back to movie theatres or just watching on Netflix etc?

Our AMC bragged that they are blocking out seats to give a social distance apart and cleaning the theater much more aggressively than before. That would be easy, they NEVER did clean anything before. Well the movie go-ers were mainly slobs anyway. They would just leave all their garbage at their seats or throw on the floor. As soon as they walked out of the theater it has garbage cans on each side of the door. No one bothered to use them.

I don't eat at the show - so I don't have anything to dispose of. Haven't seen a movie in ages but first want to get brave enough to eat in a restaurant. Son sent me a gift card for Texas Roadhouse hope to go soon. They have some tables under a tent outside but, hey, not eating eating outside in 90F plus temps. Also more thunderstorms coming soon. :(

If the surging numbers of positive cases are anything to go by, a lot of people seem to be throwing caution to the wind. :th Some communities are reinstating restrictions that had just been lifted; I've heard that AMC has expressed doubt that they can survive if things don't improve soon.

Interestingly, coronavirus seems to be fueling a rebirth of the drive-in theater. There aren't many of the original type still standing, but people are managing to find ways of setting up elsewhere. UNCW and Cucalorus (our local independent film festival) have teamed up to present drive-in style screenings of a different film each weekend this month. Walmart is supposed to have selected 160 of their supercenters' parking lots to be the sites for drive-in showings beginning in August.

Albuquerque is building an actual drive-in theater in one of the Balloon Fiesta Field's parking lots. Yay!

Sadly, our beloved Cinemark West is permanently closed. This was where the Monday Movie Matinee Group would gather for the $1.18 budget movies (usually something that was or about to be Redboxed) and then venture out for coffee afterwards. I wish I had a home theater as I doubt we'll encounter another mini-$$ movie venue.

The movie theater here was supposed to open next week but opening has been pulled back at least three weeks

I read an article that said Walmart was turning 160 or more parking lots across the country into movie theaters. It is to help with lost revenue.

A decade and a half ago, my home town fought to keep our Drive-In open. People pitched in, and today, I am sure many are thankful. I no longer live there, but have many fond memories of family (later teen dates) visits to this "Blast from the past". Our world has changed, and it is (scary) interesting to see where this all ends up. I hope that The BYC community is fairing well through this pandemic, and hope that we can ALL find happiness in "the new norm" that is to come.

Nice!

There is a drive in theater in Sacramento still

I recall in college days there was a drive-in outside of Davis on the way to Sacramento. It was the Westlane, I believe, but everyone called it the Wet Lane because they showed XXX films. All the surrounding acreage was vast farmland, so no neighbors visibly offended. I have no idea if it's still there, but probably not as the location is prime buildable land.
