Current Movies - Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN

We watched "Parasite" last night. Yes, it deserved the awards it garnered. I usually eschew subtitled films, but this was riveting. Loved the twists and dichotomies. This movies makes you think about many societal things, including laundry!

You are making me want to watch parasyte again!

I watched Artemis Fowl its opening night, I’d been looking forward to it for months. Wow. It was awful. The whole thing had just about no character development, was crazy fast paced and really only a person who’d read the book could tell what was going on. But anyone who’d read the book would hate it. Butler was an emotional, non-fighting failure, the special effects were overdone, and it sounded like it was being narrated by Olaf with a rock in his throat because they had Josh Gad as Mulch Diggums, the giant dwarf. No author cameo as promised, and the coolest scenes from the trailer never made it in. Artemis isn’t very smart, or villainous. Holly’s too young and helpless. All the emotional bits were unbelievable and in the wrong places. If you’ve read the book, watch the movie so you can commiserate with other book fans. If not, skip it.

It did get a negative rating on rotten tomatoes!

Thanks for the review. It helps a lot

The Poison Rose

Watched a Prime movie last night (which is also out on Redbox) called "The Poison Rose." John Travolta, Morgan Freeman** in a film noir-ish detective story. Supposedly set in Galveston, TX, but from the get-go it was obviously filmed in Savannah, GA: Extreme Spanish moss in the trees, the architecture, the cobbled streets, the Cotton Walk staircase, the Forsythe Fountain, Paula Deen's house, obvious lowland scenery. Sheesh. Did they think no one who had either been to Texas or Georgia wouldn't notice? Oh, and the guy from "The Mummy" (Brendan Fraser) plays a weird affected doctor in it with a bizarre lisp and occasional makeup which, IMHO, sunk the movie. He has gained about 100 pounds and was nearly unrecognizable.
Neither thumbs up nor thumbs down on the movie, one of Travolta's better latest efforts, though.

(** Morgan Freeman is in the movie, but his heart certainly isn't as he delivers a one-dimensional performance.)

I hated the ending on Predator. Guess I'm not the kind of person that enjoys it. The ending was just horrible. I'm probably too stupid to get the message (was there one???) just nauseatingly violent. My son and his GF recommended it to me also. Now I am really wondering about THEM!!

On the other hand, Kill Bill 1 & 2 are among my favorite movies. Horrifically violent but was OKAY with that. I cared about the main character.) Same with "Sin City." but the first was great - the second awful!!

RED RIDING HOOD (now on streaming Netflix)

The other night we cruised YouTube and saw an episode on what's coming out in the theaters and what's new on Netflix. The only thing that looked of interest on Netflix was "Red Riding Hood," which dropped into streaming on July 1st.

I recommend this movie! This had an interesting take on it in an adult-themed version of the tale we all know. Starring Amanda Seyfried as Valerie (Red Riding Hood), Virginia Madsen as Valerie's mother, Gary Oldman, and Julie Christie (as Grandmother). The movie could be classified as a murder mystery. It kind of had a "Twilight" vibe to it and a twisty love story. Interesting scenery and quaint village, but unsure as to how much of it was CGI.

Had no expectations for this movie and was pleasantly (and peasantly) surprised.
