My mom randomly brought home these two girls(?) and she says the guy she got them from claims they're a year old and laying eggs already. I have them separated for now.

They're pretty small and their combs make me think they're less than a year old but I honestly don't know much about chicken breeds. The black one looks like she's australorp mix based off of eyes and red color in her face.

To me they look like gamefowl pullets/hens. If so, they will never be prolific layers, but will be great for setting and raising chicks.
man if they're gamefowl i've got to change their food altogether. all 8 of my other girls are currently eating 16% protein layer and i just bought a new 50lb bag 😭

what do you mean by setting and raising chicks? they get broody a lot? we do not have roosters.

Game hens are great chick raisers with a strong desire to brood and hatch, and mother babies.

They are still chickens and can eat the layer.

Oh thank goodness! I hope they can eat pellet form tho. I let all of them free range during the day and give fresh veggies/fruits as treats every now and then so I hope they like it here. I'm so excited to see their eggs!
