I trim my chickens nails all the time, as all my animals. Babies have very pointy little nails, those just get the tips off to keep from puncturing my arms.
They are just like cats or dogs, you have to be familiar with them or else they'll bleed.
And yes, I file them down afterwards. If you want to be safe, just take a little at a time.
And ALWAYS have blood stop on hand before you start. It sucks having to find it after the blood starts flowing.
