Cyst under chickens rear

If you could snap a few photos during the process and post them I’d really appreciate it.

I’ve seen the inside of a hair follicle cyst in a dog but never a feather cyst in a chicken!

Yup that’s a U shape and I’m sure it’s an ingrown feather, I feel terrible

Could be the lighting, put it looks like fluid(?) in the middle? One spot is darker.

Look forward to photos when you lance it.

Have lanced & a feather popped out from under the skin, not much puss to follow. I have given her a dose of antibiotics and sprayed with blue spray. She’s such a good chook I hope it goes away, she didn’t make anything difficult and got some treats after it all.

Very good job on getting the feather cyst opened. That is something I have never seen in my chickens, but it seems to be very common. There are some huge ones online in birds if you Google “feather cysts.” Apparently once you see one, they can come back again.

Cyst is still there, I think the feather was just coincidence I’m now thinking some sort of tumour... she’s totally fine it’s just this awful ugly lump

I’m probably going to take her to the vet to be euthanised, I really don’t want her to be in pain. It’s such a hard decision but I don’t know what else to do.

First, a chicken pain lesson. Chickens feel pain and acute pain does the same thing to them as it does us. It makes them lose interest in being active, talkative, and often the appetite goes south.

With chickens, they do often hide it well, but there are ways to tell when they hurt. They slow down. They will be usually found on the outskirts of the flock. And when they really hurt, their tail is low and flat when they stand. They are often snoozing standing up with their head tucked under their wing. Often these tumors, and a tumor is usually rock hard, cause little or no pain. If your hen is still laying, this lesion isn't affecting her overall health.

I have a hen with a slow growing tumor over her eye that she's had for five or six years. She's now almost eleven. It appears to cause her no pain since she's active, eats like a pig, and is still top hen.

Taking her to a vet is a good decision. They may even be able to excise the cyst, if that's what it is.
