TODAYS PROMPT: “Liar”

Have fun!

“The Elf King said you could be trusted Maudius! But he was wrong! You clouded his mind with your dark magic just like you did to me… I thought after all these years that maybe, just maybe my brother still held some small piece of his humanity. You said you had changed! But you’re a LIAR.” Qivlo shouted, his whole body trembling with rage. His hands, which had fallen to his sides, started to glow with a dark brown shadowy fog. It writhed and swirled around Qivlo’s palms, shifting and warping the air around them.
An expression of horror filled Maudius’s face, the realization of what was to come hitting him like a punch to the gut. “Qivlo…No. Please, brother don’t do this.” He pleaded, and for one second Qivlo paused, a look of sorrow filling his eyes, before the aura brightened and begun growing.
It’s not Maudius anymore, his voice isn’t his.” He told himself, but a shadow of doubt crept in.

“Qivlo I know what they’ve said about me but, but you have to believe me! I have changed! Please brother….would mother really want this?” He pleaded, a desperate sadness in his voice.
Qivlo watched him, his eyes staring into his brothers, the brother he had sought to destroy.
Could he have changed? Are the Elves wrong?” His mind battled over the questions. The energy began to fade as they locked eyes, then completely vanished from Qivlos palms. Maudius began to smile, at first it was a grateful and loving smile, the way he used to, before finding the Shaded Arrowhead that had corrupted him. But it grew, the corners of his mouth stretching farther then possible. A maniacal laughter forced its way out of Maudius, but a longing look stayed for just a second before being wiped away.
He’s still in there…and I’ve just been fooled.” Qivlo realized, with a jolt of excitement mixed with fear and loss and anger.
The energy he'd been building up had withered away as whatever had control of Maudius talked him out of death. If he could just trap him maybe he could fix Maudius somehow. But Maudius had already begun to move, growing and warping the air with his own shadowy fog. Maudius rose into the air and cast several spells down toward Qivlo, which he blocked. Qivlo’s energy had returned, but just a little as he’d started conjuring it up again the moment he realized his mistake. It Enough to send a massive tree root coiling into the air around Maudius, encircling him and trapping him…for a moment. Maudius wriggled free and as he did, the Shaded Arrowhead came into view around his neck. “The arrowhead! He still has it. That must be what the thing inside him is attached to.” Qivlo thought hopefully, thinking of all the ways he could get it and free Maudius. But it was too late.
Maudius chanted a few words and immediately the air around him seemed to turn inside out, before opening a rift. Maudius went in…and it all disappeared.

I sat on a log by a crackling fire, sharpening my knife on a stone. Among the night sounds, there was another. One that wasn't supposed to be there. The sound of breathing. I could sense someone standing behind me though I pretended to know nothing.

Finally, the cold edge of a blade pressed against my throat. I put down my knife and stared straight out in front of me.

“Why can't you just accept the truth?” I said into the night.
The blade tightened

“Because,” the voice of a young woman hissed into my ear, “It’s not the truth!”

“You can say that all you want, but it wont change the facts”

“Liar!” She spat

I smiled as the knife pressed farther into my neck, releasing a small trickle of blood that dripped down, staining the collar of my cloak.

I sighed. It was time to take things into my own hands.
In one abrupt fluid motion I stood up and spread my wings, sending her tumbling back into the leaves on the forest floor. The woman gasped as I turned around and with one strong wingbeat, leaped over the log, planting a taloned claw on her chest, pinning her to the earth.

She struggled under the force, trying to escape.

I cocked my head.
Looking at her, I could see the fear in her eyes, I could smell it.

“What–what are you?” She grimaced.

“Now, the smart thing to do, would have been to know about the person you were going to follow out into the woods…HIS woods, only to put a knife to his throat and call him a liar.” I said matter of factly. “I find that extremely hurtful! What I am,” I continued, “I am what you are, but you wont believe me.” I flashed her a mock sad expression “I am a mutant, a half bred, an outcast, a freak!” With every title I swung my blade in the air and tightened my talons onto her chest. “Son to the bird people of the north and the humans to the south but accepted by neither and owing allegiance to no one.”

“You…are a…monster!” She gasped through gritted teeth.

“Already heard that one.” I laughed “Be more creative, besides, why don't you give, Uncle a try?”
That’s so cool! I have a similar story idea I’m tryna work on!
This world sounds really interesting
I agree!!

I love this. More. This is amazing.

WOW.

"So you... lied to me?" the black feathered dragon said reproachfully, rain dampening her feathers. Gale looked back at her sadly, knowing she had already made her choice.

"I'm sorry, Raven, I really am. I just can't stay here anymore." Gale said. The two black feathered dragons were dark silhouettes in the blue-gray stormy sky.

"I never meant to lie." she continued. "But... I know if I'd told you my plan before you would have tried to stop me."

"Of course I would have tried to stop you, Gale!" Raven cried. "I need you!" she reached out a pleading talon, which Gale shied away from. Raven pulled back as if she'd been struck. "Please," she said softly.

Gale looked away from her, narrowing her eyes slightly. "You know you could come with me if you wanted, Raven, but you wont. We could run away together, but you're too loyal to your traitorous father." she refused to look at Raven's stricken face.
"And if he sends me after you? Asks me to kill you, Gale?" Raven retorted, a edge creeping into her tone.

"You won't kill me. If there's one dragon I know I can trust, it's you, Raven. Besides, I'm an even more formidable assassin than you. The likelihood that you would succeed even if you did follow through and try is low." Gale stared at Raven with narrowed eyes.

Raven hissed, and then it was her turn to look away. "I hate it when you're right," she snarled, lashing her tail. The rain began to pound harder, punctuated by faraway rumbles of thunder. "I wouldn't ever hurt someone so important to me, no matter what happens." She wiped her eyes angrily, her wings shaking slightly. "He'd have to kill me first." her voice cracked.

Gale took one step forward, then another, raising her wings, which had always been wider than Raven's, over her head, shielding Raven. The two dragons stood there for a few moments, Gale ducking her head and pressing it against Raven's, closing her eyes. She could hear Raven's shuddering breaths.

"I'm sorry." she whispered. "I'm going to miss you so, so much. You've kept me alive during all this time, I wouldn't have made it this far without you. I hope this isn't the last time we meet, Raven." Gale moved to pull away, and Raven stood there, eyes locked on the ground, wings tucked close to her.

Gale took to the air, flying with determined strokes, blinking rain, or tears out of her eyes. I'm not going to look back.

But she did. And she saw the most important dragon she knew, left behind, betrayed by the one she trusted most. It felt like someone had plunged a knife as hot as the sun into Gale's soul, crippling her forever. But this was a good thing. She wasn't leaving forever. She thought. She hoped.

(This short story takes place years before my first one, before Raven ran away with Squall.)

Okay, I finally finished yesterday’s prompt. It’s still way too long but I’m not sure how to do spoilers so…sorry!

backstory:
main character, Asili, is bound to Chicxulub, who is a Kolfirin (they are like really big dogs, think larger than horse-sized). They commuicate telepathically. There’s a lot more to the story than that but that’s all you need to know for now.

4/12/23

Asili stared listlessly at the tranquil water, listening to the faint trickling sound as it over the rocks. Shafts of hazy sunlight light filtered through the thick foliage overhead, casting crystalline golden shafts across the forest floor. The air was filled with a cacophony of sounds, birds and Aetherlings alike clamoring for attention. Leaves rustled together in a faint breeze, and the sound of the flowing stream droned on steadily. A slight mossy, wet-earth scent was present. Within the stream, a school of minuscule glass minnows flitted back and forth like a flock of startled birds. Illuminated by the sun, they appeared as a living rainbow, silver scales reflecting the light in a myriad of colors.

Despite the peace of her surroundings, Asili’s thoughts were in turmoil.
Pa was dead. He’s dead, and it’s all because of you.
No matter how many times she repeated it to herself, it never quite seemed real. Almost as though she were living in a dream, expecting suddenly to wake up and find that she was still at home on the farm. Instead, she had been forced to flee, leaving what was left of her family behind; and Pa was dead.

As though oblivious to her emotions, Chicxulub pranced playfully along the bank of the stream. A flock of Scythewings sat in the trees above, watching him with beady black Aetherling eyes and ruffling their metallic silver feathers in displeasure. They were undoubtedly hunting the fish in the stream, and irritated about the Kolfirin standing in their way. He wagged his tail, springing upwards as though to snatch one of the creatures by its tail feathers. With angry shrieks, they scattered, taking to the air in search of easier prey.

Why did you do it? She asked him, drawing his attention away from the fleeing Scythewings. He turned his head, fixing his pupiless black eyes on her and tilting his head, curious.
Why did you choose me? She demanded, coming off harsher than she had intended. Kolfirin only chose those who were their equal, but she…she hadn’t done anything to deserve him. She was only a farmer’s daughter, an orphan at that, who couldn’t even protect herself…or her family.
Why? She repeated again, pleading.
Chicxulub paused for a moment, then stepped across the creek to settle beside her. He nudged her cheek with the tip of his wet nose, warm breath ruffling her hair.
Not your fault. He told her, referring to her family. She felt a twinge of sadness, followed by a wash of compassion that translated from him to her.
It’s okay. He stated simply. It didn’t answer her previous question exactly…but it was good enough for her. She knew he was right…they would be okay. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she leaned into his side and watched the minnows dart back and forth within the swirling water of the stream.

TODAYS PROMPT: “Liar”

Have fun!
I knew it was too good to be true. He was too good to be true. I was just so blinded by what I wanted to believe, I didn’t see what was right in front of me. As I fell to my death, I thought back to all the memories I had with him. When he told me he loved me, when he promised he’d always be there to catch me if I fell, when he pushed me. I got closer and closer to the ground and one word kept running through my head. Liar.
