[COLOR=800080]When they are young they typically don't need grit if they are being feed chick starter.  If you do want to feed them grit you can give them grit from a pet store.  They sell it for parrots or another kind of pet bird.  If they are kept outside sometimes the can pick up enough from the ground depending on your soil.[/COLOR]

I sprinkle mealworms on a pile of sand and the chicks eat some with the worms.

So this just came to mind as well, a possible predator control idea: Trap raccoon, cull raccoon, feed raccoon to chickens...

Would my master plan be too ironic to work???

How do you find rescues?

There are rescue charities here that solely rescue commercial hens from slaughter....battery and barn hens are slaughtered before moult at 18months. The charity go in, pay the farmer a nominal fee for release and usually have waiting lists for rehoming my profile picture on here is one of my hens with a before and after shot....before is 2 weeks ago- her comb, wattles and face are pale, the after shot is just yesterday amazing the difference being allowed to behave like a proper hen does to them x

Last summer, we put a fresh road-kill raccoon into our Bio-Pod and let it feed the black soldier flies. If you decide to trap, be sure that raccoons are legal to trap where you are. I think that they are protected here, while possums and groundhogs are not.

My older chickens come running to the fence anytime I have something in my hands because they "know" I have something yummy for them. there is not much they don't like. Favorites are any greens, lettuce, spinach, dandelions, sweet peppers, tomatoes. When I don't have anything fresh for them, I give them a couple of handfuls of scratch made by Rockin Rooster. It has a higher protein content, I don't remember all of the ingredients, but milo is at the top of the list, wheat, black sunflower seeds and corn are in there too.

When I go outside and have any sort of food in my hand/bucket I need to duck and cover for they run/fly at me like airplanes....

Chickens hurt at 1000mph.....

my rsl's LOVE mint thats growing around our yard!

Where were your chickens this spring. I pulled a 5 gal bucket full of mint roots & all, put in the chicken run. Chickens wouldn't eat it & they kept scratching it so it wouldn't root. Mint & oregano are the two things I know the chickens will leave alone. I feed mine all the weeds out of the yard. I had some burdock growing & I threw it away as I had not seen them eat it before.

lol! I think the only weeds and animals we seem to have in common with you guys over in the U.S is dandelions and chickens! All the rest of those plants and animals sound very exotic I have seen a racoon on tv though lol!
