What idiot (yes I said it) would do that! It may have been a prank though. Someone who had seen the chickens and decided to have a little fun.

Or someone thought the chickens were too noisy, got tired of it, and decided to do something about it without killing them his/herself. Of course it is just a thought, but something to consider.

I'm so very sorry for your loss,

Down to one, I can't imagine it. Good luck with your son.

I agree with Khatar, maybe some anti chicken neighbor decided this was his big chance to get rid of your birds. Too bad you can't dust the doors for finger prints.

Someone must know your animals well enough, to realize your dogs would not attack him if he set them loose.

That is all it would take for the neighbor or neighbors to have me for an ememy. Someone did tresspass and did cause harm. I would promptly inform someone, whomever, there will be consequences to someone actions. I have a neighbor that we sorta look out for each other. But he does not do anything until I tell him I need his help. To my way of thinking, if this is left to fester, it can and probably will get larger. You lost monetarily and should be compensated regardless for the "do gooders" logic.

But that's just me. I hate nosey neighbors and will nip these little problems in the "butt".

mom'sfolly :

One of your neighbors is obviously an idiot. I'm sorry you lost your chickens. I would be horribly peeved with the neighbor. Not only did they trespass, they caused harm. They managed to get your chickens killed, and could have caused the dogs to get hurt too. I think you need to talk to whoever did this and point out all the mistakes they made, and could have caused.

Wow who would do such a thing! That kinda makes me mad just reading it. If anyone would do that to me I don't know what I would do but I would not be a happy camper to say the least.

I'm so sorry for your poor babies!

I agree with others...file a police report now. I'd also start asking around and let it be known that you are extremely unhappy that someone came on to your property and made the decision to let your dogs out into the yard. Hopefully it will get back to the guilty party. Maybe they thought they were rescuing the dogs, maybe it was spite against your chickens. Whatever the case, they need to know that it was WRONG and that the police have been and will be involved in any future trespasses.

again, I'm so sorry for you, your son, and of course, your babies.

I am sorry for your and your son's loss. While everyone talks indignantly about trespassing (which it was) and how inexcusable it is that someone took an interest in the health and well being of the dogs, would anyone here REALLY hesitate to help if they believed they found animals in distress?

And for how much people are wanting trespassers to stay away, I'd hate to think I burned neighbour relations and had no one who would want to help me in an emergency.

I hate that the lives of the chickens were snuffed but we can't have it both ways. We can't force people away then expect them to be at our side when we need them.

If the dogs were actually in distress, that would be one thing. But it sounds like someone let them out of an air conditioned space with food and water - and windows, so the food and water was visible.

And even if someone didn't know about the chickens, there's a jillion reasons to confine dogs - pesticides spread in the yard, a hole in the fence, Frontline applied, contagious illness, new bushes planted - the person could very well have been letting the dogs into something dangerous.

Not to mention, a responsible person, who was really trying to help, would have left a note. Especially since a responsible person would have watched long enough to see the beginning of the chicken massacre.

I think it was either a self-righteous idiot, or deliberate malice.
