Danged ole do good neighbor killed my chickens!

If it had been me (IT WASN'T ME) I would want to know that something I had done in what I perceived to be a kindness caused a neighbor of mine distress. It's a horrible thing but I can't believe it was malicious.

Why don't you try to find out who it was and let them know. Other chickens would never replace the ones you lost but it might help.

((((hugs))))

Oh, so sorry to hear this!

I had let my flock outside one day to free range, as I do every day, and I was in the kitchen cleaning, and I looked out the window into my very secluded back yard to see my neighbor's dog with a hen pinned!

I ran out there and he dropped the hen and ran.....Now I'm afraid to leave them out very long...I will for about two hours in the evening, before dusk, and only when I'm home......I just think, that dog could have gone through my whole flock if I wasn't there....and I used to leave my hens out all the time when I wasn't home.......

You should be able to let them out anytime, but neighbors, neighbors, NEIGHBORS! So disrespectful sometimes.......

Touching a doorknob or stealing you blind is the same thing... big no-no.

Maybe they did it on purpose to get rid of the chickens.

Ok, first off- the OP doesn't even KNOW who did it/who would have done it, which means she's not on close terms with any neighbor that would have likely gone to check on the dogs to begin with, which means it was someone she didn't know well enough to offer that ability- THAT'S TRESPASSING.

Second, if the chickens were off sleeping somewhere, they may not have seen them, if they even looked in the yard (mine do it all the time) BUT, if they were so concerned, they should have looked around the garage rather than just let them out & they would have seen bowls, felt cooler air- or at least, not stifling heat & half-dead dogs, etc.

Third, like another poster mentioned- if they didn't notice the chickens (even if they were off laying around), they wouldn't have noticed or known if there was a hole in the fence, that the dogs were jumping it so were cooped up for safety, that something was sprayed or sprinkled on the grass, or a million other reasons why a person's healthy dogs would be cooped up. Again- proof that this person didn't know enough to have the right to 'intervene' withOUT alerting proper authorities OR leaving a note!!

To be totally honest, I would be looking around to assure nothing is missing from the garage &/or if it's attached to your house, etc. Because if it was truly out of concern for the dogs & they didn't have a piece of paper at the time, & truly didn't know chickens were out, you'd think they'd have come back later with a note or to make contact with you to express their concerns, or would have alerted the authorities & THEY would be making contact with you. I wouldn't expect them to just let the dogs out, LOCK THE DOOR then leave to never be seen again IF IT WERE OUT OF HONEST CONCERN.

I would be making a police report ASAP- for a paper trail in case this happens again or something is missing, installing a deadbolt (not just relying on the knob lock) & keeping it locked any time i left and/or if the dogs were in there & I left. & I would start asking around to find out who did it or who saw someone at the house, & put up a NO TRESPASSING sign in the windows of your garage & at the end of your driveway.

I'm really sorry this happened, I can't imagine how your son's going to react, mine would be shattered.
I really do hope you find who did this because if they were truly concerned, they were too ignorant to be intervening & need a good 'talking to' ANYWAY, if they were out for other reasons, they REALLY need a talking to & maybe you can let off some steam at them.

I would certainly go door to door and find out who is responisble for putting your dogs out. Chances are, they will probably be more than happy to let you know they are the "good samaritans" who rescued your dogs. When you find them, you should inform them that trespassing is against the law. As is the destruction of ones personal property, which is what they did when the let your dogs out of the garage. If one of my neighbors did that to me, I would seek some compensation, but maybe I'm a jerk when it comes to my animals. Either way- the chickens are your property, the dogs are your property, and both are on YOUR property and your nosey neighbor had absolutely no business being there. I don't know about you, but the thought of random people checking out my house when I'm not there is a little unnerving to say the least. I'm so sorry about your poor birds

and I sincerly hope you find the responsible party and give them a piece of your mind. Though I think a piece of your boot would be better.....

I just want to clarify that trespassing and breaking and entering is NOT the issue you need to call the cops for. You need to file a police report so that there is documentation on what you lost so when you find out who did it you have some leverage legally on what you are owed.

If it were me, which its not, trespassing and breaking and entering would be added to the long list of things they did wrong. I would include EVERYTHING in the report.

Well of course you want to include those things, but chances are the cops aren't going to arrest them for trespassing and opening a garage door. If that were the only issue I doubt the cops would even come out.

But getting those losses recorded on paper would make a huge difference in court with getting compensated for losses
