Danged ole do good neighbor killed my chickens!

I am so sorry for your loss!

The main problem for me is, obviously someone came onto your property and into your house. Are you going to believe that if they heard the dogs barking in your enclosed, air-conditioned garage that they DIDN'T hear the dogs going crazy in the backyard killing all your chickens?!? Bull. That made a lot more noise than the dogs in the garage!

IF I thought some animals were locked in a garage in the heat, and decided to open the door to check on them, and realized they had air, I would have left them there.

An honest neighbor would have come forward and apologized. I also tend to think someone was "taking care of the problem." I would file a police report. Someone came into your house, turned your dogs loose on your chickens and killed them. That's a problem.

Again, sorry for your loss.

As upset as you are I would go house to house and ask the neighbors if they let your dogs out. Once I found out who it was I would as kindly as possible let them know that they owe you money for the death of your chickens.
No neighbor should be going onto or into anyones property without permission. If they thought the dogs were in disstress then they should have called the authorities not take it upon themselves to tresspass.
Sorry for the loss of your girls

Our garage isn't air conditioned, the weather has been 100+ lately, we have plenty of acres of woods (lots of shade!) on our property, and our dog STILL tries his best to stay in garage. He loves it even though it's hotter there than outside. Maybe he likes lying on the concrete floor. Regardless - unless the dogs were in obvious dire distress, the neighbors had no business letting them out.

This may be a stupid question, but I couldn't help but wonder if there was ANY way that the dogs might have let themselves out. I've seen so many home videos where the pet owner can't figure out how the animal is getting out of their crate, run, fence so they set up a critter cam and find out that the pet is the actual culprit. I'm not saying that this is what happened in your case, I don't even know what kind of door/latch you have on your garage, but it may be something to consider.

If you're not comfortable asking the neighbors, I would do as others suggested and file a police report. Then... I would make sure that I lock the dogs in the next time. I find it a shame that these days we even have to consider that it might be a vindictive neighbor, but that's the way it is, I s'pose. Good luck with it, I hate that this happened.

We look out for each other here where I live as well. It is possible they thought the dogs got locked in accidently and not know of the airconditioning. Sometimes my daughters come by and let the dogs or cat out, or forget to shut a gate....I have learned to leave a note or call them and let them know if I am doing something different with the animals. I can call a neighbor and ask if they can check on something and I would not want to ruin that. So sorry!

I had left early one morning for the local farmers and craft market. Tied the dog out in the front yard. Let the chickens out to free range. They are in the back yard with a 5ft chain link fence. At about 11am my cell rings its my neighbor. But I'm busy with customers. Did not want to be rude and take the call. She keep calling. Then my husband starts calling. I excuse my self from my customer. Because something must have been wrong. I took my husbands call and he stated that Amy (our dog in the front yard) was loose. I ask if he could go take care of it. He said no he was on a "call" (hes a deputy). He said the neighbor had called the sheriff dept to find us. I called the neighbor. She said the dog was loose and that she caught her and tired her back up. But the kicker was that her husband had caught her first and was on he way to put her back in the back yard. When she yelled at him NO. Because see could see the chickens were out free ranging. That Amy would kill them for sure!. I am so happy he didn't turn her back in the fence. I know he was just trying to help. I would be so devastated if it would have happen.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I too would go talk to the neighbors and ask if anyone turned them out. Thinking they were helping. Or like someone else said done it knowing they would kill the chickens. I am glad that I had talked enough to my neighbor that she new better!

If an individual thinks an animal is in distress, the proper thing to do is to alert the proper authorities. In this case, these idiots put the dogs out of air conditioning, where they (and the chickens) were safe, into the heat, not to mention in with helpless chickens.

So sorry for your loss. I would file a police report. Find out who let them out and asked to be reimbursed for the loss of your property/children's pets..
