Danged ole do good neighbor killed my chickens!

I am wondering the same thing as a previous poster: could the dogs have gotten out somehow? Perhaps the door wasn't quite latched? Also a thought...it is a possibility that someone tried to break in and found the dogs? That's probably a remote possibility but on my mind since we have been having day break-ins in our area. Apparently the vast majority of break-ins are during the day, and often through an unlocked door.

Also, if it was a neighbor, chances are that 'trespassing' was the last thing on their mind. I would also bet they had no malicious intent in trying to 'help' the dogs, if that's what happened. A stupid decision? Yes. But criminal? Probably not. It might ease your mind to ask around and see if anyone knows anything. Sorry for the loss of your chickens.

one afternoon before my neighbor got home from work I noticed that her dog had gotten out of her dog pen and INTO the goat pen, she had already killed 2 goats and was working on her 3rd by the time i noticed. I went over there, got her out of the pen and brought her back to my yard where she stayed until the neighbor got home. When she did I walked her dog over, explained what i saw and why I took her home with me. My point of the story is that I would think that if a neighbor was really trying to be nice they would have come and told you what they did, and why they did it. Do you have any kids/teens in the neighborhood who would've let them out for the fun of seeing the chicken chase/massacre? Just a thought.

That's a truly horrible thought. I sincerely hope this isn't the case.

As do I, but we had some 13-14yr old boys in our old neighborhood who were,,,,,,,,less than respectful when it came to other people's property and animals. They did some truly horrible things (ended up in juvenile hall) and I guess I can't get that thought out of my mind

Or maybe it is. Looks to my like a burglar opened the garage and found two angry dogs, and then lit out. The dogs then did what dogs do.

To reiterate. Nothing was taken from the home. Even if there was the cops couldn't really do much of anything. I've had my house robbed, it's pretty much pointless to file a report unless something extremely valuable was taken. HOWEVER reporting how many birds died and what their value was could definitely be helpful if it was a nosey neighbor.

Here is a thought. Maybe a neighbor came over to borrow a tool from the garage (like ours do sometimes), and the dogs ran past him outside. Not thinking it was a big deal, he just went home, never thinking about the chickens. (non chicken-owners do not think chicken danger). I want to believe it was an honest mistake, but unless you go door to door to find out who and what happened you will never know. The neighbor probably still does not know (maybe it was not the right-next-door neighbor) and will feel awful when they find out. The whole thing was a "perfect storm" of bad events. l am so sorry, you must start over. Keep us posted.

Sorry for the loss! I am surprised a neighbor would not come over and tell you they *let* the dogs out of the garage thinking it was a nice thing. I too would be upset about the trespass. I know the risk of letting chickens roam while you are gone.Anything could kill them.Just stinks it was your own dogs.
