d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

After all this time, it looks like someone wants Rusty. I told her what a little snot he was, but she is fine with that. JJ, if she does go through with it and takes him this week, I'll be happy to gather up some hatching eggs for you instead. Of course, if I wait to take them to the show, no chance of them being fertile by Rusty that far out, but if that doesn't matter, I'll be happy to take them to your judge friend or mail you some.

My poor little hens need a break from all the rooster love. Aimee is bald as is my Silver Phoenix and my banty Cochin is getting there, too.

The main thing is he is going to someone that wants him. But if they change their mind, or bring him back for being too mean let me know. You have some really nice birds and it would be great to have some eggs, but the truth is right now my hatching operation is out growing my facilities so maybe later on in the year. I worked all day on growing pens and brooders so I can move some birds out of the house. It is getting too hard to keep it spic and span. But thanks alot for the offer, I am just getting to many to keep right now. Funny thing is, I am not getting many eggs but every one of them hatches.

Aubrey, been working all weekend on grow out pens and a brooder. I built a pen 4x8 then divided it in two. It is 4 foot tall. While I was looking at it , I thought why not build my brooder on top of it. ( No bending over) So any way I will end up with a 4x8 brooder. The box will be 4 ft square and rhe rest wire. I got one of the large sweeter heaters for christmas and was going to put that in it. My question is the end of the box where it joins the wire cage. Is that completely open or partialy closed off?

mine are all open, that's where I clip the heat lamp on and angle it back into the box part. Like I said, this time of year I just wrap the outside in heavy plastic and cover the wire bottom to keep out the drafts.

I use to put wooden bottoms in the box part, but Lord those get messy QUICK. found it's much better to just use hardware cloth on all of the bottoms. This time of year I just put some cardboard or old feed scaks in the bottom to cut the air flow off and toss them when they get nasty.
During the hotter months I just leave them fully open and un wrapped
But yep the inside part of the box is totally open. That way you can easily get in there and clean it out, catch chicks to move or whatever, etc.

Well, Rusty went to his new home tonight, with full disclosure of his toerag tendencies. JJ, I felt bad that I couldn't hold onto him for you another month, but I just had to get rid of a rooster in that coop ASAP. Those poor girls were hiding, especially my Cochin. All four males would jump them every time and they were being mauled constantly. If it wasn't for that, I'd have kept him for you, but someone had to go as soon as I could arrange it. Poor Aimee and the Phoenix pullet are mostly bald with the others headed that way fast. Hopefully, things will calm down a bit in there with the bad influence gone.

I made this one for cold weather. Covered up the wood with vinyl so it will clean up easy. Will probably put sand in it. I am planning on some warm weather ones. Maybe they will be laying better then.

I hope he gets along good. The millie cockrel I got off of Tom Shepard could be Rusty's twin. So I have a dark one to play with colors. Just thought I could give Rusty a place to live, so it all turned out good. Don't feel bad.
