d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Hi d'anver lovers. I was hoping you pick your brains for some advice. My daughters just had their first 4H show in June and while we were there, they fell in love with d'anvers. We were thinking of doing a project with hatching eggs in the fall so they could raise them up literally from the egg. Do you guys have any tips? Advice? Are there colors that do better than others in show? If anyone has done it before, how do d'anvers do as showmanship birds?

Total newbie to the breed, so any information you guys could share would be appreciated. I'm slowly reading through the thread here, all 387 pages, to see what info is in here. If there are any links or pages I should visit, please direct me.

Thanks in advance!
Black, blue( or self blue) and white, as long as the type is good, have very few color faults and show real well. But if every thing is equal, a real good quail pullet will beat them every time.

Hello all! My bantam brahma went broody so I got some belgian quail D'Anver hatching eggs for her. Just wanted to see if there were any special recommendations from you all for them when they are newly hatched and if you have any breed specific early sexing guides. :). I hope that they are as beautiful as the breeders pics. :D

The d'Anvers declare their gender pretty quickly. By a month old you can see the little boys clearly usually. I am new to them also but my 4 week old is crowing and u knew he was a boy at about 2 weeks old and was positive at 3 weeks olds.

Nice. :)

That is very good to know! These little guys look adorable and I love how frisky they sound but I live in city limits and they have a strict no roo policy. So boyos will need to be rehomed ASAP. We will be picking one pullet to keep and finding homes for the rest of them later. Presuming, of course, that some of the eggs hatch.

They do pretty darn good at flying out of fencing. I have seen mine get up on the rafter...over 8' high, in the coop. They need a covered run for sure.

Dang. Well, that project gets moved to the top of the list. Their momma-to-be is in a run that tops out at a hair over 4ft. She's a bantam Brahma and has issues getting a foot off the ground. The other coop has a 8-9ft fence, but it also has the biggest bully of a chicken I have ever owned.
