d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Hey all :)

Could you give me some pointers on my adult roosters? Please tell me if you can, what exactly must I do to improve them and what it is I need to improve. Should I cull them and start over with better stock? Or are they okay enough I can build from them? Going to be getting some eggs and birds with my tax return. So need to know what to do! Thank you!!

Quail #1 (They do NOT have white on them, that is from the flash, they are super shiny!)

Quail #2 - He refused to stand up... stubborn!

Same guy, he tried to leave so I snapped a quick one!

Porcelain Roo #1 (Big daddy) with his MF wifey!

My only Silver roo, I know he has bad color and his comb is too big and not really the right shape. Its NOT a single comb, the pic is just not showing it correctly. But its... big.

Porcelain Roo #2 (Sonny)

Well, that's great! Clem is a man's name, you know. Don't have to change it too much unless you just want to. Could be he was having a hard time with the extreme cold. You said you had no electricity in the coop. Did you have any heat lamps in there when we hit near zero? That might have been all it was, the cold got to him some.
I had a reg light in there after the flood when Everything was soggy. You know how. The temps have been here. It warmed up to 60* so I cut the light off. No light during the 1st Polar Vortex so I didn't add one this time either. I was able to keep water unfrozen the first time were this time I struggled. I had to cover his cage because he was pitching a fit to get out and roost up high. I'm going to keep him in until it warms up again and then out him back out.

This evening he was clucking and calling me to food. Now that he is feeling better I may have to bring him a hen in for company.

My Quail boy Hitler. He isn't mean just not friendly. I didn't get him until he was 2 yes old. He was hen raised so I think that has a lot to do with it.

Good grief I feel like I need to create a spread sheet. Are Cetawin and Ladyhawk the same?

Can't wait to get those babies.

Ha, you do need a spreadsheet! Ladyhawk is Cetawin's real name, yes. She is Native American. She also has other names, however, that would only confuse you more, LOL.

Karen, if we lose power during this storm and it doesn't come back, I may have to divide the 14 eggs between my two D'Anver broodies. The incubator is on UPS backup, however, that only keeps going so long and my generator isn't working right now. Penny and Mina are still insisting on sitting, though they've only been doing it for about a week. That would mean that I would have to let them hatch the babies, then let them keep at least one or two each if they did that for us. I cannot put all those eggs under them to hatch, then take every chick from them, if that were to be what we had to do. Thankfully, we do have the broody alternative!! And since I expect a good hatch, there should still be quite a haul of chicks for you. Hope it doesn't come to that. I really don't want to keep any more bantams in there. Naturally, for me, they'd be Rusty3, Rusty4, Rusty5, etc.

You just need to come to terms and give up one of those girls. She and the babies would have their own house that I can move and run electricity to.

I will be naming a roo Sir Rusty the Lil' Devil.

Well, you could always take Rusty2 off my hands, you know-he even comes with a free laying pullet! He thinks he's a big bad pitbull, so comical. Spike has to keep him in line. Aubrey doesn't care. He lets Spike do all the "heavy lifting" around the coop. Aubrey's getting lazy in his old age. He's all of three years old in April.

Are you enjoying this weather? It took me a hour and a half to make the 12 minute drive home from the office.

I'm enjoying it from inside. NOT. I went to the coop to get some eggs, stayed awhile because Serena was trying to pop out her first egg and when I went back up the hill, my tracks were completely gone. It's finally stopping, I think. Looks like about 2" at this point in time.
