The outcome first time is mildly feather legs and rose combs as they both are dominate in each breed. From there you have to back breed to the breed of choice and weed out the undesired traits

Aubrey - I had a question for you - when did you start your project on BBR d'Anvers?
I myself started a project to make Crele d'Anvers back in 2003 but I never got very far. I used BBR and Crele OEG. Oh I got all sorts of colors - Brown Reds, Cuckoos, Blue Cuckoos - weird mixtures between Quail and BBR.....Even some Crele-like cockerels before my breeding was interupted. I even got some rose combed bearded hens that had blue shanks and BBR color. Then I was forced to move and got rid of everything. It took me three years to get to that point and I was still very far from my objective. In my move I had to choose only a few birds to keep and thus got rid of all my project birds...save a Cuckoo hen, which is what all my current Cuckoos stem from. Originally I had two initial attempts - one through the Quails and one through my Blacks. Progress was slow.

I used to be big into breeding new colors into the d'Anver. Now, not so much. I don't have the same space or the same time, regretfully. I know how difficult it can be to breed a new color like BBR or Crele.

strated on the bb red oh 05 or so, got to be a huge pain trying to get them right, then Finally Don Hartman sold me some of his super nice ones, so that ended up solving that problem Thank God.

Took his good bb reds to my cuckoo males last year. Got the cuckoo males with a lot of red and yellow leakage from them, hens showing a little color but not much.
Then this year, crossed those males back to the bb red hens, and that was it. Yes they make all sorts of odd ball colors along the way, that's for sure. Havent gotten any blue cuckoos that way or nothing like that, made them off my splash.

got barred, black, bb red, and crele mainly off them.

Now the F1's back to each other...that gave a ton of weird colors. Some I'm keeping to play with, some were just too far out there.

Anyway, hopeing these chicks color up right this year. So far they are looking good to a true crele color. If not, I'll just keep taking the males back to the bb reds til they get where I like them.

Hate you had to stop, I knew back then threw the grape vine you were working on them.

Fortunately, with Don's birds, I have had to do any outcrossing with them any more, so it's all color work instead of type and color.
Will keep you posted on how they are coming.

Am also working on the red pyles and goldnecks too. They did have to be outcrossed to get the dominate white into the mix. Both are on F2 back to d'anver now, looking fair, but still got several years of type correction to get them where I want them

Here's the BB's I got from Don a couple years back

then after being bred to the cuckoo males

here's last years young F1 creles, they were only 5 months or so here so hadnt fully developed yet and do have even more color now after a years molt

honestly, wasnt even expecting any color to them at all on this cross, but got it.

Now about 20% of the F2 chicks so far have hatched looking just like a bb red chipmunk chick this year, with the white dot on the head...so with any luck, once they feather up, they'll look about right, some of the few older ones I have are getting nice barring to them already, but not nearly colored (grown) enough yet to know 100% what they will look like

Well, we had another knock-down drag-out fight in the bantam pen tonight. Rusty tried to take on Aubrey, I guess for the #2 spot since he could not beat out Rufus for alpha male. That went on and on, then for some reason Rufus got involved and he and Aubrey were going at it for a brief moment, and suddenly, the low man, Angus, decided to try his hand at Aubrey. Finally, I'd had enough and since Aubrey was bleeding from the comb and earlobe and panting heavily, we pulled him out to tend to his wounds and keep him out till roost time. Since they were already on the roost, we plopped Aubrey down on the end and hopefully, by tomorrow, the wind will be out of their sails. Good grief, what a show they put on! DH said if they keep this up, one of them will end up dead. I said it better not be one of my porcelains! Of course, the meanest one usually comes out on top, so little snot-rag Rusty will be left standing, if my luck stays the way it has been.

I sure hope they get this thing worked out soon. This is so rare-they get along just fine on a daily basis, but Rusty has a feather up his behind about enhancing his status, it seems. If the little pullets will start laying, I'll have some new women coming along for them soon.

They should get it all worked out with no fatalities I would think. None of mine have ever took it that far, but you can get 1 or 2 that are just butts to other males, you may have been blessed with one of them.

Thing is, like you said with todays bout. They dont necessarily go hunting a fight, but have noticed if 2 get in it, all of them want in it. So the 3 way gang up is about right

While tending your namesake's wounds, he was about as calm as I've ever seen him-probably because he was completely out of breath, LOL. We moved the baby monitor into their coop so if a fuss breaks out in the morning, one of us can run out there and break it up before anyone is seriously hurt. It was so crazy to see Angus get in on the fight. He's usually running from the other three, but guess he saw his chance tonight. Rufus is top man, though, and he knows it. I don't think he'll be easily knocked out of that spot. This is only the second time we've had any real fighting and they're turning 24 weeks old tomorrow. Eventually, they'll figure it out, but I wish they wouldn't give me anymore work to do, tending wounds. Blood sure shows up on porcelain plumage!

Aubrey - those Creles are amazing ! Simply amazing i tell you - i literally got a few goosebumps! Wowza!

Cyn - sorry to hear you are having WWF wrestling smackdown at your place - i once had roosters together - brothers got along fine and one day they decided they were gonna take a go at each other and sadly the smaller one didnt make it - was so fast by the time i got out there - hope things work out for you!

The decision has been made - i am going to add a couple hens - hopefully - and see how it is to own these cuties - or well have them own me. Then maybe in the spring get a roo - so wish me luck on my hunt!

The young girl that gave us Gazpacho and Amelia Egghart (that I raised from hatch) came over a couple of days ago. Of course, I had to show off my chickens! She was holding Gazpacho and examining him and we discovered that he LOVES to have the tip of his comb massaged! He totally relaxes, closes his eyes, and dozes off in your hands when you gently rub the tip of his comb! It happened every time she did it! Has anyone else experienced this with their D'Anvers????

I have to get a picture of it next time!
