d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

What type of clipper do I use? Dog nail clippers? I read that someone used the pedipaws nail file. Will that work? So nervous about doing it the first time. Don't want to hurt her or make it bleed badly.

Use a pair in this style...they are quick, sharp and not hard to handle. I take spur tips off of my big roosters with them. Watch for the bloodline in the nail and cut just shy of it and there should be no blood or very little. If you cannot see it from the top of the nail, lift the foot and look underneath on the backside of the nail and you should see a vein line...it can appear red, dark or even deep blue. If the bird is friendly enough, you can smooth out the edges after cutting with an emory board. My rooster let me emory board his beak the other day to repair a small chip.

yep Donald, JJ got them right for you
and yes the last one is a splash roo.

Techncally doesnt look like any of them has true rose combs, but if they are hatchery stock, that's just what you get with them, slick what I call cushion combs and single combs in the mix. Color looks good on them. and they are just find to have some to play around with
They are an inbred lot from my son's 4H d'Anver's. Didn't realize the hen was sitting on eggs until it was too late - she was hiding them from me. The parents are siblings.
We weren't planning on breeding any of the show birds until we knew more about the breed. They had other plans.

Thank you for your help with labeling. My hubby has a friend at work that wants a hen for his daughters as a pet. Hoping to find homes for the rest soon.

I moved some young birds outside over the weekend to a new pen with new sand in the run and new shavings in the coop. I have kept a close eye on them since. This morning before I left for work I went to check on them and noticed a couple of them had that "no neck" cocci look about them, checked the coop and saw one little spot of blood. I treated their water and went to work. Rode home to check on them at lunch. Lost one so far, the lavander silver quail, guess the lottery works both ways,

Lost two more after lunch today. But here is a better story. I had a quail pullet who went setting on one egg, so I just left her alone. Well the other hen in the pen layed an egg in the same box every other day or so. I was done hatching from that pen so I left them alone. The other hen went broody and they were setting in the same box. Now I am getting a chick out of that box every other day. Up to 4 now. Hows that for a staggered hatch?

Oh JJ I am sorry to hear about the babies. That bites. I lost all 5 of the beautiful OEs Cynthia and Wynette conspired and hatched for me...same thing and I even did a maintenance dose of corid on them when I got them here. Some days you cannot win for losing I swear.

I am watching my SLW hen slowly wither away (Internal laying issue). Poor gal is happy and running around, eating like a pig but dropping weight day by day. I know her time is coming or the time when I have to help her along. I have only had one other hen go through this and it too was a hatchery SLW but she was 3 years old and this one is half her age. I have consulted with the one person who has gone through this more times that she wishes to count...speckledhen and Cyn is almost 100% sure that is what I am dealing with and it sucks bigtime. But losing the babies is just as bad if not worse for me so I hope you can snap them out of it quick JJ.

On another sad note...I am about to cull a little cockerel who absolutely beautiful if I cannot find a new home for him ASAP and for the sole reason of him being a danged idiot (was a sweetie and then a month ago when he hit puberty he transformed into a lunatic)! He screeches, jumps, flies into walls and etc whenever you try to touch him or get within 2 feet of him. He is now making the entire pen a bunch of spazzy loons. One of his girls already killed herself flying and jumping into walls and such...she broke her neck trying to avoid being picked up. Today he went nuts and flew up into the ceiling and almost killed himself...just because I was filling the feeder near him. Any ideas? I have tried everything I know....spending time with him, handling him, giving him treats and just sitting in the pen with them for a couple of hours with a book so he would know I am not there to hurt him and he still acts like an arse. I raised him the same way I do every bird that comes here and I do not get it...Suggestions? Anyone? I really hate to remove his head from his body because he is so beautiful but he is making me and the entire pen nuts!

The Idiot:

Know anyone that wants an Olive Egger cockerel..heck I will make it a pair and toss in the blue pullet? These birds are gonna be the death of me yet but I could not stand it without them.
