d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Mina laid her very first egg today at 27 weeks old! Still waiting on Lucy-she is two weeks younger than Mina.

Opal, one of the Coch'Anvers, is still broody though I didn't give her any eggs. Misty, her lookalike sister, is still laying, but sounds just as broody when she's on the nest. Goofy girls, those two. They sure didn't inherit their mother's personality, may she rest in peace. I do wish they were more like her, but they are a good mix of the Cochin and D'Anver sides of the family, for sure.

yep, like Cynthia was saying, I have to agree, it's best to know what you are dealing with, and in the mean time try to keep everyone seperated from the sick ones. MG is very common this time of year, spreads like crazy too. It can only last for 3 days or so outside of a host bird though, so if you isolate the sick ones quick you may be ok with the others. would be best if you moved the non sick ones to a new pen and let the sick ones stay in the current pen. MG is a very weak celled infection and is pretty easy to kill off, and Like I said, if you miss some, they are dea in 3 days anyway.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM, as Cynthia said, any bird with it, will always be a carrier of it from then on and can and will infect others and will pass it on threw the eggs to her offspring. There is NO cure for it. Most birds dont die from it though unless there's other infections or complications mixed in with it. They usually get over it in 2-3 weeks. The antibiotics basically help prevent other infections while the immune system is compromized from the MG infection.

Signs of it are swollen eye, head shaking, sneezing, mucus, etc, pretty much our same basic cold symptoms.

I however have never heard of the lamness and all you discribed from just a MG infection. That is usually associated with Marek's Disease. Unfortunately, Bird who have contracted it almost always die, and I dont believe there is anything treatment wise other than vaccines as a preventative.
I hope I got her out of the pen in time. I tooked her out last Sunday. Lost my first one that night and my crossbeak on Tuesday. So far everyone else is OK. The rooster stays outside. He free-ranges. We bleached everything down inside and out. The sick one is in our house still hanging on. She can sit up eats and drinks but cannot walk. Her eye does look a little swollen no mucus no sneezing. The rooster became sick 2 weeks ago and is better now. Finished giving him Tylan on Thursday.

Dont be greedy with all those blue silvers!!!

The blue silvers need a little work, they are out of those Ideal hatchery birds I had. But I have a BBB silver quail cockerel that I expect to fix that next year, Next year the focus is going to be on all the silver stuff. Blue silver quail, columbian, silver quail, lavander silver quail and silver birchen, Oh and I got a silver spangled hamburg cockerel and my mind set on silver laced d'Anvers. And lets not forget silver duckwing. Big plans for next year

Here is what most of my blue silver quail are looking like, I have some with better color but type is all about the same.

Cyn, I am so sorry for your loss. No matter what it is always too soon. 2stryroos, I sure hope all your illnesses are behind you and the rest will be fine. Any chance you are heading the the lincolnton chicken stock on the 22, it should be a nice place to meet other BYC members.

JJ, sounds like big plans for next year, and those blue silvers are good looking birds, are these first years attempt at the color?

yep JJ you sound pretty bussy for next year. Get some of those knocked out and send this way. It's always easier to let someone else do it all and just get the finished birds haha...
Maybe we can trade out some stuff then.

2stray.

yep if they are getting better, I doubt it's Marek's. Those usually dont get better. If it has puffy or swollen eye's I'm pretty sure they'll tell you it's MG. Hope it's something fixable and they get back to you quick. My last round at the lab took 6 weeks to hear back on.... told them never mind it was too late then. Just e-mail what it was so I can know next time.... nothing like prioritizing

I kinow it's a "little" ambitious, probably 5 or 6 years on the silver laced. But I have the stuff to make the rest pretty quick. Besides you have to know where you are going befor you can get there.

Up date pic. What do you think? I got a couple of these.

JJ, you get the best picture of your guys. So cute! No doubt, knowing where you want to go sure makes getting there easier. I cant wait till next year when I can really work on my project. These little guys sure have won us over. so cute and sweet.

Hey the D'anver nationals, is that the OH show the first weekend in OCt? do you have an adress and details. I still think I might try to stop over there, if that is the show. I would love to meet and talk to d'anver folks and learn more about the type, so I have a really good picture in my head what I am looking at and for.
