You know, I think it is the same with all types of animal breeding. When a breed or breed lines are still being developed to meet a particular standard and the genetic traits are not completely locked in so that there is a high degree of consistency in the traits of the offspring, then breeding is difficult, expensive, and a lot of work. Chickens are certainly a lot less expensive than some other animals to breed, but still probably a lot of work.

So, people buying the animals end up paying a lot more and sometimes end up disappointed with what they get.

I believe I read on the Marans Breed site that they don't completely understand yet all the genetics behind the egg color and how the genes work to effect the color. It's sounds really interesting, but my hat is off to they people who are really seriously working on developing the different lines because I'm sure it's difficult.

It's a cool bird. Very cool.
