Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Yeah I've never heard of the blonde in the hackles having anything to do with the blue gene. It doesn't compute for me. But "irregardless", those Hulk Hogan manes needs to go.

Yes, I think, correct me if I'm wrong, it's the gene for Mahogany I looked it up when we were discussing it on the old Marans thread. I can't quite remember which web site I pulled this up from at the time,

Mahogany red :Mh/Mh (and Mh/mh+) it enhances present red into dark red.

Mh is very strong and it does 3 things

- Mh makes s+ (gold) dark red;

- Mh has a columbian like action on black pigment;

- Mh restricts black to the outer ends of the feather, by extension of red.

If Mh is absent (theoretically) the gold would be more pale.

So from what I understood in reading it and looking at other sources, ER/ER birds can end up with one of these variations of Mahogany: Light: mh+mh+ Medium: Mhmh+ Dark red MhMh.

MhMh is the strongest expression of the dark red color in the hackles on this genotype

Please jump in if I am wrong here.

Well, I'm no expert, but after I read that info I went outside and looked at all my roosters trying to guess who might have which type of Mahogany genes. It was fun.

I don't really know how standards-based or accurate it is, but the kip calculator refers to a bird with MhMh or Mhmh+ as a red necked birchen and mh+mh+ as a gold necked birchen.

And, as you might guess the red necked birchen is dominant

anyway, long story short, your bird looks correct to me-

Nice eggs! Are those all glossies?

I sure hope to get glossies, but I don't know what my pullets are going to lay and my rooster came from about a 50/50 mix of glossies and matties.

Yes, exactly I guess you can tell by the picture. Those birds (the pic is about a 1/12 years old) all laid a very round glossy type egg. I guess it's referred to as the bloom on the shell.

Nice birdie Drom!!!

I think the Presley gave em short legs...I just love the feathering... and the substance.. My hens are like that as well... Go figure!!!
