I've heard that about the hens but thought it was a collective 15 hours so a 10 hour day and then five hours the next, then an egg. Not sure how that would work for the roo. I do know that all the eggs I've been collecting and setting have all been fertile and they are not under lights. The last batch I candled yesterday were 8 days in the incubator and 100% fertile. You live in my state too and I think the days are around 9 -10 hours? The 21st will be the shortest day and then up hill from there. Woo hooh! Spring is on it's way. Is it even considered winter yet? The 21st the first day of winter?

I read a lot too, right now it's the new seed catalogs and Omnivores Dilema. I love to read and the PNW helps make time for it. It gets dark at 4:30 and I'm forced to go inside. After dinner we have 4-5 hours before bedtime. Perfect time to read.

thanks Pink... You answered my question about the blind roo... He would be infertile... and how do i know...he didn't crow... HMMMMMM. I often wondered about that... He has been gone for years now and I wondered if he was infertile as well as blind... The ladies did love him and sat down beside him often.... but he never crowed....He couldn't see the sun.

Oh no... he was a good rooster...He was very pretty... There was a main roo that tolerated him and didnt' bother him... A dog ended his existance... Till then he was a happy well loved boy...Not sad. I always wondered about the blindness question... He was sooo pretty...He was the best looking Blue Copper!!! Even a person in the city could have a rooster that didn't crow if he was blind... (roosters are sooo pretty)

yep.. and the hens would cluck to him and help him find food.. they would groom him and wash his face....so cute... I gave him to a city dweller that loved roosters but couldn't have something that crowed.... (along with some of his girls) .... unfortunately a nieghbor dog got only him... The hens got away...
